Talking Springs and 8-lug wheels on 1500 Mega

Just bought a 2008 Ram 1500 Mega 4X4 w/towing package. 5.7L HEMI, 3.73 rear end and 5 speed auto. This truck also has four springs shown as options and has 8-lug wheels. I don't think 8-lug wheels were standard on this truck. It's an SLT. I can't find anywhere if this increases my towing capacity at all. Talked to a guy at Dodge and he couldn't find it either. Any ideas? Right now I only pull a travel trailer with a GVWR of 6500 lbs. Without the springs and 8-lug wheels it's rated at 7450. I may want to get a heavier trailer is why I need to know.

Default 8-lug wheels

Does anyone know what the option code is for 8-lug wheels? I don't understand why anyone would have ordered this truck with all of the trailer towing options and then not gone with the 4.10 rear end. There isn't a tag or anything on the rear end that has a code for what gear ratio is in it so I have to rely on the print out the dealer ran for me.

Gene K is on a distinguished road

The Mega is not built on a 1500 Chassis. Basically its a 8800 lb GVWR 2500 thats been de-rated slightly. It weighs a half-ton more than my 2010 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 and has a 1,710 lb higher GVWR. The 3.73 is the standard gear in a Mega 1500.

I will see if I can find the ratings. Assuming that trim is supposed to be SLT (XLT is a Ford Trim):

GVWR 8,510 lb
Payload 2,090 lb

GCWR 14,000 lb
Tow Rating 7450 lb

The GVWR and RAWR is usually what gives you the problem with a 1500. You overload the truck or rear axle before you get near the tow rating. With the Mega Chassis you have the GVWR (8510 vs 6800) and RAWR (6010 vs 3900) to handle a heavier trailer. If the 3.73 wont pull the trailer with the authority you want, find a good independent shop and have them put 4.56 in the Dana Axles.

Im not condoning exceeding the rating but given a choice of pulling a 10,000 lb trailer with a Mega 1500 (which isnt rated for it) or a regular 1500 I know which one I would prefer.

He nailed it, mega cab 1500s were built on 2500 frames. They all have solid axles front and back, coils in the front, leafs in the back.
Due to the layout of the cab and the weight over the rear axle the mega cab suffers with its payload (1970lb which is good for a half ton).
Your weight rating is what it is, there is no changing it. If you should haul over the limit (which is around 8k lbs I believe) and/or not properly equipped you could face the possibility of your insurance company not covering a claim if it happened with the trailer attached
