ok, after looking into the symptoms of a blown plenum gasket, I've come to the conclusion that is what my problem is.

excessive oil usage---yes (was wondering where it was going!!!!)
pinging--------------yes
decreasing fuel mileage--yes (it was always bad, but seems worst than before hahaha)
sometimes bumpy idle--yes

so, looks as though I will have to fix this before picking up a bigger throttle body. time to place an order at hughesengines.com

New O2 sensors will stop the pinging.

It's likely the fuel. That engine was designed a long time ago, and fuel has constantly been getting worse since then.

Got it. So what if i put 87 with a bottle of octane booster? does that stuff really work? what if i put 91 with a bottle of octane booster? what then....

It's probably cheaper and easier to just buy the higher octane. Plus you don't really know how much octane booster you'd need to add...

well its been a while, but I finally installed the hughes belly pan and gasket this weekend, while I was at it I also did, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, thermostat, upper rad hose, bypass hose, valve cover gaskets, replaced a couple vacuum hoses that were cracked, pcv valve, and an oil change. So I'm running 87 now and the pinging seems to be gone, and the bumpy idle is gone. but I just noticed yesterday that now around 1500 rpm there is a slight stutter if I take off slow from a dead stop. She idles fine, If I rev it in park it doesn't stutter, or if I pork it from a stop it doesn't seem to do it. I need to replace an o2 sensor, would that make the truck stutter at low rpm? I also put autolite platinum plugs in, is that the problem? Now I'm reading that these motors only like copper plugs, is there truth to this? should I just go and blow $20 on a set of copper plugs and see if that makes a difference?
