Default Whining/Banging rear end, leaking fluid from Driveshaft/rear end joint. Help!

Hey guys.

I am having a problem... I noticed that there was a strong whining noise on a ride home tonight, and it continuiously got louder. After a little while the rear end started to slightly bang a little... I pulled over and noticed rear end fluid was leaking from the joint where the driveshaft meets the rear end. That seal seems to be gone. There is rear end fluid EVERYWHERE, and it doesnt seem like there is much, if any, left in the rear end. Do you guys think that something is majorly wrong inside, and I need a rebuild, or that that seal is gone, and I need to replace it, and refill the rear end? Any help would be GREAT guys. I really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Damn... That is something i didnt want to hear. Im thinking about refilling the rear end and driving it around the block to see if the noises are still there, or the noises were only there because i was running low on fluid. The truck still does move. This sucks......

You should plan on getting out your BIG wallet. My set of gears and parts was $1600 but I had a friend do it. He said the dealers would be in the $3K range. My 2001 only had 31K on the clock when that happened. It has 51K on it now and no problems......so far.

Okay... Added some fluid and took it for a 10mph drive. It does still whine, and it bangs going into reverse or drive from park. It looks like something has gone on the inside. Does anyone know if they sell a kit for a rebuild on this rear axle?

you may be able to find a whole rear end in a scrap yard, might be an option, change out the whole thing, housing and all... that could be a DIY job, but a rear-end swap out, if you have no experience id get a reputable shop to do it (not sure how mechanically inclined you may be :P)

This exact thing happened to me about 3 years ago on my '97. Started off with just a lil bit of noise in the backside. After a while, she was clanking and making tons of noise. I parked it, crawled under, and snapped a few pic (of which I can't find now). But, long story short, the front end of the pumpkin was really lose and almost falling out. The knuckle joint (wrong terminology) was still attaching the driveline to the pumpkin, but it was sloppy lose and all fluid had drained out.

Anyways, I was shopping around online for rebuilt rear-ends and kept finding them in the $500.00 range. One day, on Craigslist, I found a rebuilt rear-end out of a '98 for $50. I figured "wth" and grabbed it. If it was crap, I only wasted $50. Anyways, got the truck to a buddies house by removing the driveline, and slapping the truck into 4 wheel drive (front wheel drive at that point). He looked over the rear-end and found out I had bought a professionally rebuilt rear-end. So I got really lucky with that instance.

But, now that my long story short has turned into a long story, I found it alot easier buying a whole rear-end as opposed to opening up and replacing everything. Of course, at that same moment, we replaced the brakes while everything was apart. But, it was really helpful having someone that knew what they were doing too.

Hope this helps,
Josh

sounds like at a minimum, you will need to get the pinion seal replaced
you can borrow or buy the tools & the correct parts, or take it to a shop

A shop will pull the drive shaft & inspect the U-joints, the U-joint could be the noise maker
Then likely they will spin a tire to see if the noise is coming from the rear end
If there is no noise in the rear end, they will quickly replace the pinion seal & the U-joint & you are on the road

Otherwise its time to go deeper into your wallet
Use a shop that gives you some kind of warranty on the work
Proper shimming is a must when your working on the differential
