Default Rear Diff. Gear Oil on 2009 Dodge Ram

Hi Folks,

I own a 2009 Dodge Ram, Hemi 5.7, 2X4, Laramie.

I changed the rear diff oil at 15000 miles. I used the following:

Valvoline
Synpower full synthetic
75W-140

Today when I took my truck for free engine oil change, the guy also checked the gear oil and noted on his log that the "fluid oil looks wrong."

I told the guy this is Valvoline synpower full synthetic 75W-140.

He said we use Mopar full synthetic with "friction modifier."

Do you agree with the dealership?

Either one works, but if you did not put friction modifier in there, be sure to do so NOW, before your rear end is spilling its fluid all over the interstate. The friction modifier can be purchased in a small bottle from your dealer parts dept, and added to your current fluid. I would do this NOW, ASAP...before your diff eat's $hit.

Do you have limited slip differential? I think the friction modifier is only required with LSD.

How many miles do you now have?

He has an LSD. 09 Laramie= fully loaded=LSD.

If you do have the Limited Slip Differential
then you would need the Friction Modifier

I'm curious as to why you changed the fluid so early
My service writer kept telling me that mine was due for service at about 15,000 miles also, he said that the technician said it was dirty.
I waited until 30,000 miles & changed it, i went to Royal Purple & an aftermarket cover.
The funny thing is, the service writer still tells me that i am due for service, makes me wonder if the tech ever checks the fluid level

Doesn't the manual call for it at 15k or 25k miles? or somewhere around there...

Quick update:

According to my truck build sheet, I have conventional diff. NO LSD. I just confirmed that with two dealerships after I gave them the VIN number.

The dealer that changed my regular oil doesn't know squat. If he would have entered my VIN he would have known that mine doesn't have an LSD. No LSD means no friction modifier.

Manual says 18K Check and replace if neccassary.

Are you using your truck; 1)police, 2)taxi, 3)fleet, 4)off-road, 5)frequent trailer towing?

If not, my 09 Owners Manual ONLY requires to inspect fluid. Up to 144,000 Miles or 144 Months it does not require changing.

I have the factory Lifetime Power Train Warranty, If they want it changed, it's on thier dime! My dealer tried to sell me the 15,000 mile change, I told them if Dodge thinks it needs changed, Dodge can pay. They said "it will be OK, no need to change".

I don't need to spend extra money just to say I have XYZ fluid and I change it every XXXX miles. If it needs it, do it, if not, why?
