Default the 5.9 freebie mods..

alright so for some of us newbies and others with questions id like to start a thread about freebie mods or adjustments that can potentially give us more power and MPGs.

Default Crank sensor mod.

There is a rubber grommet in the bell housing also, remove it. Now look at the sensor's bracket, notice the 2 bolt holes. Slot each hole 3/8" both ways, still giving the bolts something to hold onto. Then insert the sensor back into the bell housing, making sure you pulled out the rubber grommet. Thread the 2 bolts back in loose, then slide the sensor as far as it can, towards the oil filter, away from the intake. This will advance, moving it towards the intake in the same direction of crank rotation and will retard the base timing; do not do this unless your teenager is driving the truck. It will usually be limited by the bell housing how far you can move it. If you are really brave, grind the bell housing and fab a new adjustable bracket. This will add 3-4 degrees of timing across the whole board of advance tables, and cure the Death Flash problem in your Magnum. That'll be $5 please...just kidding!

Definitely butt dyno. If you're doing a lot of stop-n-go, would probably help mpg a little. Adding an extra 3 to 4 degrees to your base ignition timing is a time-honored deal (definitely perks up the low-end response) that was accomplished by giving the distributor a good twist. However, they took that away with the Magnum. This mod makes it possible again. Not as good as the distributor twist, but 4 degrees is better than nothing. The LA/Magnum family of engines likes 32-34 degrees total advance for best power. I don't have the specs, but some things never really change, and the factory settings going waaaaay back usually had max advance of around 26-28 degrees. It's all computerized now, but I'd bet the numbers are close. By adding 4 degrees, you get closer to ideal max for this family of engines, and since it's all in the initial timing, it also directly boosts low end grunt.
Keep in mind that increased ignition timing can and will require higher octane gas in some instances. Depends. Might not, unless you're pulling a trailer, or on really hot days. Good thing is, it's easily reversed if you want.

With the 5.9 compression ratio, you're less likely to ping than with the 5.2, but most will opt for the timing boost and counter any minor ping by swapping in a 180 degree thermostat.
On slotting, you can use a drill, dremel, or even a good rat tail file. You're basically elongating the holes into bolt-width slots.
