Default CB/Scanner Install

These 4th gen's don't leave much room for installing electronics, so I finally bit the bullet and did an in-dash install. Not as difficult as I would have thought.

Very clean install

How deep is that unit and how much space was there to work with? I have been thinking of putting a CB in the same spot. Thanks

Thanks! The scanner measures (according to the manual) 7.06"w x 6.10"d x 2.44"h. There was plenty of room for it, I actually have a serial cable attached to the back of the scanner as well (to update the unit through my laptop) that adds at least 2" to the rear corner on the drivers side.

On my dash I had a spare strip with no switches (it said RAM on the strip); I removed the strip and found that the width was almost exactly what I needed, so I just rough cut the opening small and filed it down by hand to clean it up and to get a nice snug fit with the radio. It uses the same type of bracket a CB does, which mounted to the bottom of the center dash piece; I needed to add a 3/4" block of wood to bring the radio face to nearly level, but once bolted in place it's rock solid. I ran the serial/USB cable through the center console (lots of room there) into the lower storage compartment. For power, I just tapped the accessory circuit that serves the two power receptacles in the console.

I still want to add a VHF radio, I just can't figure out where to put that...

Awesome, thanks! I wanted to install the scanner there but it looked like I'd have to cut away the two screws that attach the console piece to the dash. Is that what you did here or are they still there? This might be a great place for the VHF radio.

As an aside, what kind of radio is that? When i was in AZ a lot of guys used VHF but from what I understand they're "line of sight" and won't work well in hilly terrain. I'm looking for something with more range than a CB, but I'm not sure now what is best. Any suggestions?

There was some cutting, bending, & trimming involved,
the radio is quite large, when compared to the Uniden & Cobras

I have a Uniden PC78XL as a 2nd radio, but i need to make a box for it
I also have to have it TUNED
I also have a Cobra 75 WX ST Compact/Remote Mount CB Radio with SoundTracker® and NOAA Weather, i have it mounted in a suitcase, it is a loaner for anyone on the job that needs one, even the police

[IMG] [IMG]

I also have 2 Midland 40 channel handhelds, for when i need to control traffic

I use the CBs in my work, they are required by law

What do you think of the 75 WX?

I was thinking about that as an option. I need it for keeping track of road conditions, staying awake and in case of emergencies when I'm on the road for work but I don't need it on Long Island, NY between trips. Looked like it would make for a tidy install that would disappear when I didn't need it (less temptation for thieves). I was thinking of pairing it with a Wilson 1000 antenna so that I could remove the whip and just put the cap on it when not needed.
