Default Dealer Replacing Torque Converter @ 430 Miles

I picked up my new Ram last Thursday, and immediately started hearing the "growling" sound that I've read about in several threads here. I dropped off my truck at the dealer this morning, doing my best to describe the sound to the service manager. I told him it sounded kind of like rattling or grinding, like a muffled sound of someone beating on a metal trashcan.

Got the call two hours later that they're going to replace the TC, which will be in on Wednesday.

I was wondering if I'd have a fight on my hands with the service department over the noise, but it went surprisingly well. Evidently the service dept. is aware of the problem.

I'll make sure to ask if it's the upgraded TC that they are putting in, and I'll report back after Wednesday after the replacement, as to whether or not the noise is gone.

One thing, has anyone here noticed any performance problems associated with the noise? Better performance after the TC was replaced?

And before any of you say anything, I WILL post a picture of my truck here soon.

Bill

Will do, stangallmotor. I take my truck back in Wednesday for the TC replacement. When I picked it up this morning, the service manager told me that the replacement TC is an upgraded unit, designed to fix the problem.

They're also going to fix a couple of very small dents/dimples in the hood while it's in.

It would be nice to have someone record the sound of that growling. I am hearing "something", at about 40-50 mph, that makes me think it is the same thing. It is not too loud, I even thought of driving it further to see if it gets worse (less than 2000 miles on the truck).

I have mentioned it to the dealer while getting an oil change, and they have (so far) not pursued it, but I haven't pressed the issue.

Yes, there is a TSB or a Rapid Response Bulletin out on the torque converter issue. There were still trucks being shipped with the old style converter when this problem was identified.

With my truck the sound is subtle, and it helps to be on a very smooth stretch of road when listening for it. It was more pronounced when in tow-haul mode, feathering the gas pedal at around 40mph.

Torque converters that are used with our Rams, have a clutch in them, it is used to stop slippage that is built into the system, when that clutch is engaged, you are in
Torque Converter Lockup & have minimum slippage.
I believe that the clutch is what is making that noise
After they replace the converter you should feel quite a difference in performance

If you have a few minutes, watch this video, it describes & shows how our torque converters are assembled & work
The interesting part for me starts at the 2 minute point, before that it is like a text book lesson

I had my TC replaced on my 2010 about 10 months ago, was told by the Chrysler Engineer who checked my truck that they were going to upgrade all TC's after doing mine and a couple others. I guess they just like replacing TC's under warranty, because it is still occuring. I did not notice any driving difference, except the noise was gone and still is.
