It has to be flashed by the dealer. You can install the kit yourself to save a few bucks if you want.

I talked to my dealer when i bought the truck. They want 300 for the parts and install. I read the pdf and it comes with two new fobs. The dealer says that the new fobs are programmed to the computer so you will have two old fobs that work but dont have the auto start button on them. Then you will have the two new fobs that come with the kit that have the auto start button on them.
If you read the instructions with the kit, it say that it has to be programmed for the module to work. It also says that you can install everything in the kit EXCEPT for the key module. You will have to take it to the dealer and install it there. If you install that module and start the truck you will not be able to program the module and you WILL have to buy a new one. FYI.

Okay, so we know the Mopar one is cool and all with the integrated keys yada yada yada.... but what about an aftermarket one? I almost got one that let me lock unlock start etc from my smartphone and came with a better alarm as well.

what is everyones thoughts on that?

(just trying to play devils advocate with options here)

i can't weigh in on aftermarkets for this truck (had one on my old Sierra though), but i will say that i'm impressed with the quality of the factory remote start. the range of the keyfob is pretty incredible...better than my "1500 ft" aftermarket i had on my Sierra. also the truck automatically detects whether it's hot out or cold out and turns on the A/C or heat accordingly.

Only if you have dual climate. If you have manual climate controls, it does not automatically set the ac/heat. Though you can manually set them before you get out.

I had a Viper alarm installed in my truck with remote start.

It can be done for right around $400 installed... I had some upgrades added, but with the addition of an alarm on top of the KE, I couldn't stick with the factory stuff.

You can do an aftermarket one as you stated, and can get a lot more options out of the unit vs the factory one. For instance in my '04 I had the units pulsed negative outputs control my headlights, my reverse/upper cab lights and had another output to turn the heated mirrors on after the truck started. This of course was a lot of work and I needed to build an external latching circuit to make most of the funcitons work..

Also, you would obviously have to have the aftermarket key fob along with the factory integrated key fob because that's your key now, where as before you could just dump the factory remote. Not a big deal but just more to have in your pocket. For any installers out there it isn't a terribly hard install but you will need the DBALL unit to integrate the aftermarket brain into "tricking" the truck to start. You however will not have to sacrifice a key like the old transponder units.

If your just looking for an Auto start and nothing else, I would do the factory unit yourself and then take it to the dealer to be flashed. I haven't done one yet myself, but the instructions look super simple..
