Default New Laramie in Southern California

Hello, and thanks to all who contribute to the knowledge base here, and the Ram porn! I opted for a 2011 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab 4x2 in Silver. Sorry, I have no pics, but it is bone stock except for dealer-installed Mopar side steps and the Line-X liner I had sprayed on last week. Oh, and the Texas Longhorn steer head badge I stuck on the tailgate! Hook 'em!

I've been a GM truck/SUV owner since the early 90s. This is the first Ram I have owned, and the first Chrysler vehicle. I went with the Ram primarily for interior styling and price vs. GM or Ford. I live and work in the city now, so I don't "need" a truck at all, but I grew up in Texas, and I am just more comfortable driving a truck. Some thoughts about Dodge vs. Ford and GM:

Interior: The Rams are the hands down winner in interior styling in my book, with Ford next and GM a distant third. Every dealer I talked with said that the Ram interior design is very much influenced by the Fiat ownership. I have no idea if this is true, but to me the GM interior is bland and plastic, and the Ford is bland but less cheap than the GMs. One issue so far with the RAM - though the voice recognition with the NAV/Stereo unit (730N RHR in mine) is great, there is no VR control on the steering wheel -- you have to push a button on the the 730N to activate it. Seems like a big miss. A question: do the rear seatbacks fold down on the crew cab? I realize the seats themselves fold back, but it doesn't look to me like the seatbacks can fold down.

5.7L Hemi: Big smiles from me on performance. Frowns, though, at MPG. So far, I'm getting a whopping 12 MPG combined city/hwy with typical Los Angeles traffic. Mine has the 3.92 rear axle ratio. I'm wondering if that was a mistake, and I am learning to lighten my foot.

Exterior: There are things I like about all three. I actually like the squared off look of the Fords better than most Ram owners seem to. The Ram is great looking too. It's stout, and has nice curves. The dual exhaust looks and sounds great to me, even stock. Isn't time a truck that MSRPs north of $40K come with OEM HID headlights and LED taillights? I doubt I will install aftermarket ones. I've seen great pics posted here, but I've had bad experiences in the past on other vehicles.

Future Mods: Probably nothing but a tonneau cover, and I am really torn on what to get. It's coming down to an Undercover SE (just the black plastic, not the smooth painted) or a Leer 700 series. The leer looks great to me, but I worry I am going to need to haul tall stuff more often that I think, and the convenience of removing the Undercover is tempting. Any thoughts out there would be appreciated. If I end up modding intake/exhaust it will be from pure boredom and curiosity. I am an ex-Harley rider, though, so it's entirely possible I'll feel the need to breathe!

One observation: I am already totally reliant on the backup camera and sensor in this truck. The last full-size truck (excluding SUVs) that I drove was a '94 Silverado extended cab long bed. I remember being able to back it into even the smallest parking spots unaided by any kind or camera or sensor, with nary a scratch. How'd I used to do it? :-)

See you on the road.

Hello and welcome to the forum, glad to have you join us and congrats on your truck! Nice intro, too. Those of us here know why we picked the Ram over the competition but cool to read the opinions of others who did look at all the offerings and what made them go with Ram. We'd love to see some pics of your new ride when you can! As for mpg's, should go up some after the break in period is done and there are mods that can help with that, too. Lots of great people and info here, so any help you need, just ask and I hope you enjoy the site!

Default Brad, thanks for the info. I'll take some pix soon.

Bummer the VR didn't make it to the wheel in 2011! Interesting seat back mod, though. Something to consider.
