Default 97 ram valve cover breather... can you plug it?

so my question is on my ram driver side valve cover has this breather. can i plug it or does it need to be open... it was hooked into my intake was told all it did was throw exhaust into the intake for fuel economy on the highway.. i bout 2 rubber caps one for my intake and one for the breather.. was just making sure if i plugged it nothing bad is gonna happen

That breather is the intake for the PCV system that allows it to intake fresh air so the engine can suck it into the combustion chamber and try to burn it off. WHile it may rob some power, just plugging it will have even more serious consequences.
FYI if you plug it your crankcase pressure from your engine will have no where to go.
And like electricity it will see the path of least resistance, meaning a weak or loose gasket will start leaking. Sometimes on older engines the "oil down" is pretty spectacular.
So rather than plug it off I would run ot back into your intake(you mean air filter assembly right). The filter simply cleans the incoming air. Then it passes through your motor mixing in with crankcase ickies and is sucked through the pcv valve into your intake manifold and then burnt in the combustion process.

I'm confused with the exhaust part of your description. You're not describing a one way or anti backfire valve for the egr system are you?

Without Positive Crankcase Ventilation, the gases in the crankcase will build in pressure til they force a gasket failure in the engine, or the plug you put in place will become a projectile. The thump you hear will promptly be followed by billowing flames. Pull over and break out the mellows. To a lesser result, it may just make the engine run rough/badly. The PCV is a necessary device, much safer than an overboard dump tube.

i've seen guys try to plug the pcv and breather on both covers and it causes a lot of mayhem. mostly just oil pan gaskets, but i've seen weak head gaskets go too.

vehicles before 1960 had a downdraft tube at the rear of the engine, excess pressure was sucked out of the engine by wind passing the lower end of the tube, the tube had a point on it, that went towards the front & the shorter cut side went towards the transmission, the image below shows the angled cut

then came along SMOG devices, the hole where the tube had been was sealed off & they started using PCV valves in the valve cover with a hose that fed into the air cleaner
