Default New Ram Owner

I just purchased a 2003 Ram 1500, 4.7 engine , about 122,000 miles, the engine knocks or taps for a maybe a minute or two when it is cold then goes away, my girlfriend says the engine sounds like it is coming apart. But it does not smoke, does not knock or tap anytime other than starting up. I changed the oil when I bought it replaced with 10 - 30 and a Advance Auto Parts Filter, I changed again today replaced with 10 - 40 and a Fram filter, any advice as to the knock. I have some other issues as well that I need advice on such as replacing the heater core.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Mike

Welcome and congrats on the purchase. The hemis do have a tick in the valves when u first turn them on because there's no oil up at the top of the engine.

This is not a hemi. I have read were some people add the GM oil additive to help with this.

I believe you need to run 5w30 in the 4.7. it has small oil gallery openings, thinner oil helps reduce the tap. I went full synthetic in mine.
