Default How to get a little more grunt out of the 5.9?

Just picked up what must be at least my 20th 2nd gen ram. Had many of these trucks, just can't seem to hang onto them (or any vehicle for that matter) for more than a few months before I sell it and get something else. Finally found one that I think i'm gonna hang on to for a while. It's an 01' 2500 quad cab long bed. Only 60k original miles with a rebuilt trans at 50k (go figure). When I bought it a few months ago I immediately yanked the plugs out which all looked great, replaced em anyway along with new wires. I do the occasional hauling, 18' car trailer loaded, or a bass boat. The motor is very quiet, seems to be in perfect running condition, no skips, sounds smooth when you get on it. But pulling out of my driveway and immediately flooring it from a 2 mph roll at most, it will not so much as skip a tire. It just feels like ive got an extra 1k pounds dragging me down. After it gets passed 3k to 3200 rpms it seems to come alive a lot more, but the down low grunt just isn't there. The truck is bone stock, just wondering how much power you can get out of the 5.9 with bolt ons before you get into stroker kits and head work.

My plan at the moment is Royal purple fluids (trans, diffs and motor)
K&N drop in filter or some sort of CAI (suggestions?)
Maybe a magnaflow exhaust from the manifolds back, high flow cats.
And from what Ive read the SCT tuner done by hemifever seems to be the way to go with these trucks.

So any suggestions would be awesome, and anyone who has done similar bolt ons with the tuners, just wondering if it's worth the money and how much of a difference there is after the mods were done.

you can always buy a ported and polished throttle body, but they can get expensive, but you can always cut the fins off your and polish it up, to the tps tune, crank sensor tune, kegger mod (can do this if you replace the plenum gasket), replace the clutch fan with a electric fan(s), headers (summit sells a nice pair for around $200, have em on my truck) and a catless y-pipe from jegs (have this on mine as well). if you want i can go through and find threads for ya for these mods, and look up the headers and y-pipe

Welcome to Zforums XSTork!

I'd probably start with the tuner. I have all the basic bolt ons and my truck runs great from 2500 up stilll will NOT lay rubber.
I attribute this to big tires and highway gears along with a "death flashed" computer that retarded the timing to stop pinging at WOT.
The tuner, especially the SCT removes the torque limit programing and creates a better advance/fuel curve.

Get rid of the restrictive exhaust. The stock muffler is awful. Go cat-back.

Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers. Used with 52mm TB, Headers, and kegger mod, this really woke up my 5.9.
The best money I've spent was a SCT tuner from Hemifever. I have 3 tunes (87 octane, 91 octane, 93 octane), and as stated before, it removed the torque limiter program.
