Default Torque convertor

I'll let you all know the outcome next week mine is going in Tuesday for the convertor and a front pump because of morning sickness the service manager thinks the pump has to much clearance causing the truck to hardly move when first starting in the morning in reverse. Hopefully the problems will be solved they ordered the star case convertor written 6/2011 my truck was built in 03/2011

Not sure myself on this. I think I hear something on a cold start-up in the mornings as I am getting up to speed on the highway as it is shifting but I only hear it once in a while. Kinda like a slight squeal/air leak like sound? It shifts butter smooth compared to the 2007 quad cab I traded in for it. I got a 2011 Express built in June of 2011 with the 5.7L in it. I only got around 1300 miles on it right now. My wife's is a 2010 quad cab and she has never heard any kind of noises soooo.... idunno. Maybe it's the coffee kicking in at 4am on my end. I will try to listen a little more to see this week.

Yes I have this problem, I noticed it the first night I had the truck. It is progressively getting louder, I'm now at 1800 mi. At first I thought it might be little bit of valve train rattle from the engine possibly being lugged from the low rpm lockup, but since it is getting louder and across a wider rpm range, and now thanks to this site I know for sure and it will be visiting a dealer soon. I just wish a $40k truck would make it longer than 3 weeks(or 1 day depending on how you look at it) without having a major drive line component replaced. Its gonna look great with its paper tags and its transmission dropped out of it.

After reading the threads and asking some questions and reading the star case. I am now hearing it. I had to concentrate, but I could here it. It isn't as loud as some have suggested or heard, at least in my truck. I'm about to break over 9000 on mine. What is the downside to ingnoring this? I really don't want to go in and have them remove them drop the tranny on my new truck.

I was wondering the same thing. I think I hear but can't say for sure. If I ask the dealer, I am certain their default answer is they do not hear it. Can anyone tell us the risk of not being able to identify this problem?

Apparently mine is not plagued with this issue. The sound I was hearing was my trailer hitch sitting under the passenger seat and would occasionally shift or attempt to roll, sometimes scraping the underside of the seat carriage at the same time and I am pretty sure that being half awake and my wife's coffee probably added to the effect of it.

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum. I bought a 2011 Ram 1500 two months ago and found this forum by accident. I'm glad I did; the information on this forum has been invaluable - thank you to all the members!

Anyway, just wanted to say that I noticed the infamous torque converter noise when I first picked up my truck. After racking up 1000 miles, the noise got worse. I called the dealership in my area and they initially said it was the MDS. I went for a ride with the trans tech, and he noticed it right away and agreed it was the torque converter. Long story short, dealer had my truck two days. Torque converter was pulled and was found to have "failed." Not sure how or in what way, but they replaced the torque converter and now my truck shifts great with no noise, just as it should have from the factory.

To those who think they have this problem: be persistent. The shop foreman at my dealer said they never heard of this problem, and that mine was the first that they had seen. I think many people are accepting the noise as normal behavior, even though it is being caused by a defective part.

Again, thank you all for the help. I love my truck again!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your story. Glad you were able to get it resolved with the dealer.

I have this and also have the cold start issue. the colder it gets here in MN the worse it gets. I put my truck in gear when I start it and it can take up to 6 seconds to move.
