Default 4.7ho?

Through looking online i have found that there are three different 4.7l out puts 235hp, 265hp and 310hp.

The 4.7 liter version was the first of this family, appearing in the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The displacement is 287 cubic inches (4698 cc) with a bore of 3.66 in (93 mm) and a stroke of 3.405 in (86.5 mm). It has a cast iron block and aluminum heads with two valves per cylinder. It uses a chain-driven overhead camshaft. It originally produced 235 hp (175 kW) and 295 ft·lbf (400 N·m) of torque. The 2010 4.7l has 2 valves and 2 spark plugs per cylinder and puts out 302 hp (225 kW) and 329 Lb. Ft. Dodge has claimed that it has increased compression ratio and improved cylinder head port flow, the 4.7 L V8 is available with three transmissions.
The PowerTech was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1999.
Applications:[edit] 4.7 HO/Magnum

A "High-Output" version of the 4.7 L PowerTech engine, producing 265 hp (198 kW) and 330 ft·lbf (448 N·m) of torque, was introduced in 2002, first appearing in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.
Applications:[edit] 2008 Revisions

The 2008 Dodge Dakota and Ram pickup trucks, Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUV's, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Jeep Commander came with a Corsair version of the FFV 4.7 L engine, with dual spark plugs per cylinder, a new slant / squish combustion system design, and 9.8:1 compression, raising power to 290–310 hp (220–230 kW) and 320-334 ft·lbf of torque. See Allpar's page on the latest 4.7 L

My question is how do I tell if I have the 235 or the 265 model.

I believe it should say on your build sheet.

You can get it here.

I have yet to see a HO that didn't actually say "high output" on the intake resonator (where mine only says "4.7L Powertech"). Not saying it isn't a HO if it doesn't say that but that has been my experience. The build sheet is good to have anyway and will tell you for sure.

I believe the HO had different intake manifold and cams, not sure of anything else different though. The one's I've seen always said High Output on the air cleaner/resonator hat. The 310hp 4.7L came out in 2008 and for all intensive purposes is a different engine altogether. It is based of the earlier one, but a majority of it's components were changed and are not interchangeable.

I would take that "top 10 engines of 1999" with a grain of salt. I see it wasn't mentioned in the years since. I think the 4.7 has a lot of issues and flaws. There are so many post, topics, etc online about it. I am actually very upset that I ever bought a Dodge with the 4.7 liter. It was Dodges answer to the overhead cam engines that Ford, Toyota & Nissan were building, Only problem is that Dodge didn't do their homework and the other manufactures did. The Ford 4.6 SOHC and Toyota 4.7 SOHC engines will run well over 200 thousand miles without ever cracking the valve covers. It's a shame because I really like the Ram's styling. Another downside is Dodge's transmissions, Even the Cummins gets a crappy trans that needs to be upgraded or replaced. I sure hope the new Rams are better or Dodge will be in trouble.

As far as the H.O. goes I'm sure that it would be proudly advertised on the air intake. Someone mentioned that the intake read 4.7 Powertech, Mine reads 4.7 Magnum. Sure it's the same thing though.

The 4.7L is not a bad engine, despite what people think. It has no more issues than any other engine, and there are just as many bad posts in the 5.7L section. The only issue if any for the 4.7L is the valve tap, and 99% of the time it's not an issue, just a noise, and the hemi has it's own taps as well...both are great engines but both are man made...

The first 4.7L in my opinion was lacking hp, but it was still a good engine, especially if you just wanted a truck. If you wanted a fast truck it was definitely lacking though. The HO wasn't too much better but was somewhat... The new 4.7L is really a great engine all around, and performs exceptionally well too. It blows all the competitors out of the water in performance and mpg. My truck with the tuner is even faster than my buddy's 3rd gen hemi. Of all the people I've known with 4.7L's in their rams and dakotas(have known more than a handful), they all do regular maintenance and have had absolutely zero issues with their trucks(and engines). The 3rd and 4th gen trans are really pretty good as well, certainly not junk... Most issues are from lack of maintenance(sludge, valve tap leading to failure) all from not changing the oil as needed. Most people who buy the hemi are more aware, more "gearheads" and probably take better care maintenance wise on average, and most people who just buy a truck and don't care get the 4.7L, and are less inclined to do maintenance...just my opinion.

Yeah, come to think of it I believe mine does say "Magnum" on the resonator rather than "Powertech". I couldn't remember...I just knew it said something other than "High Output", lol.

That wikipedia article, while informational, is also somewhat misleading. It seems to imply that the Magnum and HO engines are one and the same when obviously, they are not. I too thought maybe I had the HO engine because my resonator says Magnum on it but after receiving my build sheet that is not the case.

Also, I'm not certain snrusnak, but it seems that Powertech is just a name that originated for the 4.7L engine family back in 1999. There are actually V6 and I4 engines in the Powertech family. I have also seen the 4.7L referred to as the "Corsair" engine a couple of times but this seems less common.

Something else I have noticed while googling is that the first gen 4.7 engines in the Rams usually say "Magnum" on the resonator while the other 4.7 vehicles (such as Jeeps) say "Powertech". I think Dodge just put the Magnum on the Ram engines because Rams have long been associated with the Magnum engine name. What does the 2nd gen 4.7 in the Rams say?

Yeah I've never heard the 2nd gen 4.7L referred to as a magnum, and you are right I forgot about "corsair". I can't remember but I think mine said 4.7L and nothing else. I'll try to find the stock resonator tonight and have a look. I know for sure it did not say magnum, it is either "4.7L", or "Powertech 4.7L"
