Default Dodge Electrical Question

I have a 2003 Ddge Ram 1500, 5.9L and I'm having problems starting it. My A/C condenser fan went out and I tried to test the fan by connecting it directly to the battery to see if I could get it to operate before I got a new one. I must have touched the wrong wire to the battery because I heard a pop and now it won't start. I initially thought it was a fuse, but I checked all the fuses in the fuse panel under the hood and all are still good. I don't know what to do now and hope I didn't totally screw something up. When I try to start it, it turns over but won't start. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like the 'pop' you heard may have been a relay. Not a fuse... Check the ASD (Auto Shut Down) Relay... Swap it out with one of the other relays in the box that has the same part number. Be sure though that the one you swap it with isn't detrimental to starting your truck.

What would cause the ASD relay to trip????

Any number of short circuits. If the PCM feels in any way that there will be catastrophic damage to the engine or the PCM, it'll cut power to the ASD relay. But if you heard a pop and nothing's working, it was more than it could handle... Is it even cranking? Do you have power with the key on? I'll do some research at work tomorrow and see what I can find.

Well, I did some looking and asking around at work and the concensus is, without physically looking at it, it's hard to tell what exactly happened. Honestly, I would look at the relays first, if you're SURE none of the fuses blew. Some fuses will pop and the separation will be at the leg of the spade and hard to see. BUT, in retrospect, if you actually HEARD it, it was probably enough to blow the filament apart and would easily be seen...

Worst case scenario, the pop you heard was the ECM... But the fan relay should have taken the brunt of the surge and blown before it had a chance to get THAT far. Here's a schematic of the condenser fan and relay:

I know it's not much help and I apologize, but I hope you can get a little further with this info... Let me know if you find anything or need any other assistance. I'll look some more at the circuitry when I get a chance and see if I can see anything else.

Are you having problems with your condenser fan not working? I had (still have) that issue. My fan motor is shot... If you disconnect it and test for resistance between the two pins on the fan plug and it reads OL, it's shot.
