Default Moaning Noise in Reverse

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 and it is making a moaning noise sometimes when i go in reverse. Does not matter if I am going fast or slow. It sounds like it is coming from the right wheel well area. Just trying to figure out what it is before my warranty expires. Everytime I take it to the dealership they say they can never hear the noise. Thanks for all the help guys.

Does the noise change in pitch when you go different speeds? Like, is it a low pitch when going slow, and higher pitch when you speed up? Are there any other odd symptoms with the transmission, like being slow to engage, or clunking when you shift into reverse? How's the fluid level and does it look fresh?

Doesn't do it in drive? Maybe a wheel bearing.

There is no other symptoms of this. And it does not really change pitch going fast or slow. It is just like a pretty loud moaning noise. Almost like a rubbing. But I'm not hitting the brakes when it happens. I'm either coasting backwards or slowly hitting the accelerator. Fluid level is filled and looks fresh as well.

Does not do it in drive either. Only in reverse.

I did a search and found other reports of the same situation, even to the point of saying it only happens in reverse -- the good news is that a lot of guys reported hearing this for years without any ill effects, but I'd still want to know what's causing it. My luck I'd ignore it and be one of the few to actually have a problem!

i would say the sound you hear is a seasoned reverse gear, the reverse gear is very close to the final (rear end) ratio, and its not helicut to quite the gears, this may be the issue, but its normal, since i cant hear the noise its tough to say, also maybe the parking brake shoes are draging, or they are very dirty.

Okay well I am currently in North Dakota and am now hearing it sometimes when I am in drive. But it does not have the same exact tone it makes when it is in reverse. Not as deep/loud. Seems to be mainly when the wheel is turned and truck is making a slow turn.

Are you sure it's not the power steering pump?

Start by checking the fluid level. You can test to see if the noise you are hearing is the PS pump by sitting still with the engine idling in gear, and turn the wheel left and right and listen to the pump noise, and see if it's the same noise you were hearing. It could have been that when you turn around to go in reverse and look out the back window you were turning the wheel slightly....? Just a thought...
