Default LONG HAUL- front driveshaft?

This weekend, im heading out to michigan on friday, then turning around and coming back sunday. Its almost a 400 mile journey of 90% interstate driving (65 mph), so my question is.... Should I pull the front driveshaft out? I hae already replaced the cv joint once, and at $212 to have the old shaft rebuilt, i really dont want to do that again. I plan on taking the shaft with me just in case, but i have heard that running fast speeds for long periods of time does one helluva number on that joint. TIA

Strange....driven my truck from Phoenix to Iowa, Phoenix to Tulsa and Tulsa to Minneapolis twice and never dropped the front shaft. It's about the only original piece on the truck (which means its gonna fail soon).
It shouldn't be spinning while your truck is moving unless your CAD is stuck in the actuated position so both tires are locked. Usually your 4wd light should stay on. Have someone observe your truck while it is driven and see if the front shaft turns.

If your blowing u joints out with the front shaft free spinning there is something misaligned in your front end. You may see 1-1.5 mile a gallon increase but It's not worth it to me

I agree, your axle disconnect will release your front driveshaft from its responsibilities, while in 2wd, it may lope along, viscosity drag, but it certainly wont be turning at 75-80 MPH, maybe 5 or 10 MPH., unless you have 4wd selected. your shifter will directly disconnect your trans case, and the lack of vaccum will leave your axle disconnect freewheeling. My 98 has a slight lag when connecting, thats the delay in your '4wd' light coming on, as far as I know(vaccum doing the connect thing)

I wasn't even thinking about older 1500s having vacuum connect/disconnect. I was just thinking their solid axles were like the ones on 3rd gen HDs an there front axle was always connected and the shaft always spins

The joint was blown when i bought the truck. This is the first serious long haul i've taken the truck on, and at 400 miles one way, its definately going to be a test.
