Default Dodge 1500 one ton axle swap

I have a 98 dodge ram 1500, 360. I've been considering swaping them out for a dana 60/80. A couple questions i have is telling the difference in the 60 and 80. Im not to familiar with dodge onetons. I know in a chevy 60 the easiest way to tell is it has 3 u-bolts and studs on the pig. But on the 80 i have no idea. Just want to make sure i dont show up some where and buy a dana 70 under the impression i'm getting an 80. I'd appreciate any help i can get and any opinions about 1 ton-ing my truck thanks

Well easiest way is to just look at the casting number on the housing. 60's say 60, 80's are stamped 80
60's axle tubes are 3.125" ,70s 3.5" and 80's are 4"
What are your plans for stepping up to one ton axles?

Time to step up to a diesel? Beefing up 1 component may stress other components to the point of breaking....

That's what i was hoping to eliminate was the chance of breaking. With the axle swap theres not much of a chance of anything breaking but maybe a u-joint here and there.

U-joint, trans, transfer case- all the bits that may get stressed. How much weight are you towing?

Im not using it as a major tow rig.. maybe occasionally hauling a buddys truck or a quad, im just mainly planning on doing tug a truck with it. With 1 tons it'd be in the 6500 lbs class, so i'd be pulling another 6500lb truck

I'd find a donor rig and have at it. If it's not a diesel although I believe most 1-tons are, you could get the HD transfer case off an auto and it should bolt on. This way you'll get the driveshafts too.
I believe the 2002 1 tons which are still 2nd gen trucks, had front axles with no CAD. One less thing to go wrong!
