Default Change Oil Message!!!

I changed my first oil at 2300 miles. The truck has 3700 miles on it and I get the "change oil" message which leaves me to believe they never reset it when they changed it.

I can't believe this would come on in only 1400 miles but possibly at 3700 miles.

Without digging through my manual, how do I reset this thing?

Also, I took my truck on a 317 mile jaunt on a perfect no wind day traveling mostly on good 2 lane road and driving 65 mph. It was in very "hilly" country making it shift down occasionally.

It would slip in the "economy" mode occasionally also.

All I could manage was an actual 17.1 which was disappointing to say the least. The computer said 17.8 but I always go by actual fuel put in.

It's the Hemi with 3.92 gears.

Turn the key to the start position but do not start the engine. Within 10 seconds depress the go pedal to the floor and back three times. The oil message light will be gone now.

had my oil changed at 1000 miles and the message just came on at 3500 miles. so 2500 miles driven, easy miles too- just highway to and from work. there's been countless threads like this which leads me to believe Chrysler's oil monitor system is garbage...much like their fuel economy calculation.

Is the monitor system adjustable to different interval settings? My Toyota let me select my own intervals, I think there was 5 or 6 to choose from.

No way to change the interval that I know of. It's duty cycled so the interval is dependent on how you drive. I think it comes on way to soon considering the recommended oil change interval according to the manual is 10,000 kilometers or 6,000 miles. Since I change my own oil I just reset it when it comes on and change the oil according to my own schedule, which is every 6000 kilometers.

With your low 3.92's at 65MPH, that GPM is about right. I have 3.55's and find that the MDS doesn't activate very often at or above 65. To help with the price at the pump and if I'm not in a hurry, I rarely set my cruise above 65 even if I'm in a 70MPH zone. I'm averaging around 17 but if it's just back and forth to work (hilly 45-50MPH 8 mile trek) I get 19-21 MPG depending on wind.

As for the oil, there are several modes of thought on this, but the manual states a change every 8K and makes no mention to the first one being any sooner. So, "my" mode of thought on this is the first change on any newer engine isn't critical like they used to be. This is because everything now are roller motors rather that flat-tappet which need high zinc oil and a "break-in" period for the lifters and cam to get a proper wear pattern and rings to seat. Then, after the first 500-1000 miles, if you did not have the luxury of a dyno to do the work, you must change the oil the get the assembly lube and any break-in materials out. The new motors and building methods have much tighter tolerances and are good to go from the first start (essentially). Now, if you want to change your oil on an earlier schedule, that certainly will not hurt, you will just go through a few more filters and oil more than what I would. In the end, it's all up to you.

Cheers

I was going to say the book states 8000 miles. I just had my oil changed at about 3200 miles. My change oil light came on at 3500 miles? I do not think Chryslers oil change light is anything special.
