Default A/C vent removal help

Well the Fairy Modmother visited me this weekend. I installed a Lockpick V.4. Since I had the center instrument panel and console apart, I went ahead and painted the silver surrounds of each a metallic black with a flat clearcoat. I also used some of that 3M carbon "look" vinyl to cover the center panel around the radio and that chrome bezel around the shifter.
I wanted to paint the silver around the A/C vents on the far left and right side but I could not get them to pop out. I could get the top part to come out but I got the feeling that if I kept prying on the lower part, I was going to break something. Are they held in with a hidden screw somewhere? Or am I just being too much of a wimp?
I know the info. is somewhere on the forum, I just can't do the correct search to find it.

Thanks for your help,
Scott P.

I'm looking into this as well as I didn't want to break them either. Don't forget to paint the silver on the steering wheel, they just pop out but be easy as they do have a clip.

Bump, I just got a roll of Di-Noc and I will be doing this on Saturday.

I remember reading someone saying they just popped out but I had the exact same experience you did.
Came out on the top but didn't seem to want to let go on the bottom.

Thanks Moparornocar (BTW, great name!), that's a great idea. I didn't even think about the steering wheel stuff. Good to know it just pops right out.

Scipione, that 3M Di-noc stuff is amazing. Just remember, HEAT is your friend. I used a heat gun. I'm not sure if a hair dryer will get hot enough. Just when you think you have totally screwed a piece up, throw some heat to it and it's like magic. Patience is also rewarded. Oh, and don't do what I did and start to cut some of the holes out before you have it laid down nice and smooth. I thought it would help to cut on it a little where a hole was going to be to give a little bit of "wiggle room". Bad idea. Leave the sheet whole until you have it where you want it, THEN cut the holes.....

Scipione, the right person just hasn't looked at this thread. I've seen quite a few painted A/C vents.
I'm not going to get a chance to mess with mine until next weekend. Let us know how it goes. I'm pretty sure they just pop out. I was running out of daylight when I was working on mine, so I just decided to leave them alone.

Mopar, Yeah I need to take some photos. Once I finish the interior, I'll post some up.

Thanks,
Scott P.

Hey Scipione!
Any luck getting the A/C vents out?
This weekend is looking pretty good for me to try to paint mine.
Just curious if you were successful.

Thanks,
Scott P.

I was able to get them out (without breaking them)!

The clips that hold them in are on the top and SIDES, not the bottom. The easiest way is to use your little plastic pry bar "trim removal tool" and pop out either the left or right side of the housing. Once you have one side out you can slide it over and pop the other side out. The top comes out easy. Here is a photo from the back of the housing. You can see the clips on the sides. Of course once it's out it is very easy to paint or cover with the 3M carbon vinyl.

Well crap! I can't get the damn image to load. I've tried Image Shack and using my Picasa account. I guess I just suck at the internet....... Hopefully you will see what I mean.

I decided to put the 3M carbon vinyl on the steering wheel pieces instead of painting them. I am using a metallic black paint with a flat clear-coat. I thought that color would practically disappear with the black steering wheel. So I went with the carbon. So far I like it.

As far as the center vents once you remove the whole piece they just pop out and the ones on the side no tool needed open the vent stick your finger in the very top give her a tug and boom out they will come and as far as the ring around it be careful they pop out the same way but are easier once the vents are out.

finished product
