Default What can I expect to pay for an oil change on the 3500?

I've asked this before and the thread got hosed up. I thinl people were thinking I had a gasser.

Several weeks ago I stopped in to my local mom and pop shop and asked the dreaded question on how much for an oil change on my 3500.

Are you setting down for this; 150.00 bucks! I did not want my entire fleets oil changed just my 3500.

I walked on the deal and told them it was too dam much money. If the mom and pop shop was 150.00, what was the dealer going to charge me. I'm affraid to even call and ask!

I was expecting about 80.00 for a diesel oil change not the 150.00. Did I miss something.

I think your last thread about this stayed pretty well on track a month ago.

I think people were quoting gasser prices and not diesel prices. I've not found any place that changes diesel oil for 29.95!

I did not make that clear in my original post. I think those that are saying they had their oil changed for such a low amount are either telling a white lie or quoting gasser prices.

I'm looking for an honest answer not some figures pulled from thin air.

I had a 2010 Ram 2500 CTD for the last year and just traded it for a 1500 Hemi. The higher cost of maintenance for the diesel was part of the reason I switched.

I almost always changed the oil myself, but had it changed at a dealer in Yuma for about $120. Last time I took the diesel to my local dealer (to check out a problem with the oil level rising due to regenerations causing diesel dilution of the oil) the service manager asked if I wanted my oil changed. I told him I usually do it myself, but if he could do it for around $50 to go ahead. I ended up getting charged $51 for that change. Their usual price is right at $100.

Some of the other expenses I got tired of were the fuel filter, at least every 15K miles for around $45 if I install it myself (no fuel filter in the hemi, just an in-tank screen), air filters for $35, front and rear diff oil changes at 15K (when towing often), costing about $150 each for the front and back when the dealer did it.

Diesels are great when the power is needed, and pull like a dream, but you got to pay to play.

Bill

hey cbr,
have you checked how many quarts your diesel holds?
oil changes are not cheap for those torque monsters. the price you quoted is most likely for the cheapest oil and filter available. not the place you want to skimp. use fleet guard filters and a decent oil. cheapest price will be the oil change you do yourself, use a large pan. lol

hopefully you will see when your odo turns 300000 miles you will see the diesel has actually not have been expensive to maintain.

You're looking at about $145 retail price + tax and S&H for oil and filter with AMSOIL.

I think the price I was quoted was very high and I'm sure it was basic oil and filter.

I asked a friend this week what he pays and lives in Charlotte, NC and pays 115.00 for an oil change.

I went to Wally World last night and priced the standard oil and the premium. All I can say is ouch! 14.99 for a Gallon of the standard (15W-40) stuff and 23.99 for the premium (5W- 40) stuff. Oil filter ranged from 4.95 - 14.95.

I failed at the mainting portion of my homework when buying is all I can say!!

The dealerships use Shell Rotella in the diesel engines

Walmart carries several viscosities & both synthetic & regular oil in gallon jugs, for the best price that i have seen

I like the rotella oil but it is a little pricey. Valvoline makes an oil the is aprroved by cummins, you could probably get a regular oil change for around a $100. Fuel filters are another $45
