Default I killed it, but something tells me he killed his car first

I chalk this one up to over modification to the other vehicle. Looked like a late '80's Nissan 300 with a nice muffler and way too many ground effects. He revved up beside me. I just matched him, mid throttle somewhere for me, not even whining it out. This car I would assume should kill me, and it was sounding like it should, but for some reason it did not seem able to find that next gear. I passed him and that was it. I was very disappointed. That car looked and sounded like it was mean, but failed in performance. Maybe a slipping clutch or something, or he missed a gear, I really didn't get it's lack of acceleration. But I'll take it.

A "nice muffler" and ground effects generally does not mean it's fast. At least in my locale, it usually means the kid driving it emptied autozone of every doodad they had and got the loudest fart muffler they could afford welded or clamped to the 1 7/8" pipe feeding it. Ugly, often-unpainted ground effects take the place of curb feelers from the 70's. Their distinctive snapping sound warns the driver that he's the proper distance from the curb, and no speed bump passes unscathed.
