Default 4X4 Question

So my truck is my first 4WD drive truck, I have owned AWD in the past, but need a quick 101 on using the five options at my disposal.

I have:

2WD (obivous)
4WD Auto (Does this mean 2WD until slippage, than 4WD???)
4WD Lock (Does this mean AWD? or 4WD HI, in which two wheels, one on each axle are on, until slippage?)
4WD LO (I get this one)

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Yoiu pretty much have the right idea.
4hi is both axles in regular gear. How many tires that actually spin depends on the axle, wether its locked or limited slip or just an open diff.
4 lo is a reduced gear 4 wheel drive

2WD (obivous) Good on ya!

4WD Auto (Does this mean 2WD until slippage, than 4WD???) You're in 4WD, with all wheels driving you. Power will split between the front and rear axles as necessary based on slip because of a center differential. You're OK to use this on paved roads in the dry.

4WD Lock (Does this mean AWD? or 4WD HI, in which two wheels, one on each axle are on, until slippage?) You're in 4WD, with all wheels driving you. The power is split between the front and rear axles equally- the center diff is locked. DO NOT use 4hi on dry roads- use in snowy/muddy/sandy areas. Also, there is no gear multiplication- the truck will drive as normal gear wise.

4WD LO (I get this one) Same as above with gear multiplication

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hope the above helps!

#5 is neutral- allows you to disengage power from reaching both front and rear diffs.

You might want to break out the owner's manual- it's a fascinating read

http://www.autodealertools.com/quick...Ram%202500.pdf

Section 5, page 334 to 340

I was wrong on 1 point- the auto 4WD is more of a slip sensing system that diverts power to the front wheels as needed, but generally operates in RWD until needed.
