Default transmission shimming??

alright i gotta get rid of my ram for a molre family oriented vehicle and was looking at a 98 durango 4x4 on craigslist. it has the 5.2 and is automatic. the guy is saying he shimmed the transmission to start slowing in 1st gear for towing? he said "we sell em where i work. u put them in the transmission so it doesnt shread ur first gear with heavy loads"...ive never ever heard of this. am i crazy? or is this durango starting out in 2nd gear like i think it is? i have yet to drive it..not too sure if i want too.. thanks ahead of time fellas

Yeah that's a load of crap. Don't walk, run from that thing. On these transmissions you pull the shifter to low to engage the rear band, which locks the 1st gear planetary unit, which enables engine braking. If the shifter is in drive, this doesn't happen. Shims have nothing to do with that. Best bet to improve towing performance is to install a TransGo, Fairbanks, or other similar valve body kit to improve performance, lube, and control. The stock valve body won't allow manually forcing down to first gear til you're at a very slow speed so it's kinda hard to rip out the first gear sector. It's specifically designed to prevent this sort of situation.
