Default Stock Wheels are cruddy...

What is happening to my stock wheels? I have seen this on some other Dodge Ram 1500's that have the same wheels. Anything I can do to get this fixed? I plan on selling the truck soon and this looks horrible. It all started at the end of this past Spring and it keeps getting worse!

2004, so those are polished instead of the chrome clad ones, right? Looks like they just need polished...some Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish ought to clear that acne right up.

I have a small area of that, but nothing near that bad.

It has some sort of clear, plastic like, covering that is flaking and allowing the corrosion.

Clear coat is peeling, will have to get them repaired at a wheel repair shop.

Couldn't the clear be stripped off and the wheels polished and then taken to a paint shop to have some clear sprayed or would that be more work then sending them out to a wheel repair shop?

I agree with Stainless...the clearcoat is peeling off. I don't think what you are seeing is actually damage to the wheel but rather old, oxidized clearcoat that has changed color. I bet if you start picking at it you could flake it off wherever it is oxidized like that. If you can peel it all off up to the point where the discoloration stops it still won't look perfect but it will look better than it does now.

Theoretically if you could get the clear off you could polish the bare aluminum wheels to remove any surface defects and then wax them on a regular basis and they would be fine. Bare polished aluminum looks just as good if not better than cleared polished aluminum. Problem would be finding the right chemical to take the still adhering clear off without damaging the aluminum underneath.

I took some 600 grit, WD40, and mother's aluminum polish to one of the wheels tonight. It cleaned it up and tomorrow I'm going to clear the one wheel. I'll post pics once it's done. It doesn't look 100%, but it's FAR better.
