Default Sometimes, I just really hate people... and my job.

Ok, some background:

I'm an industrial safety officer/emergency rescuer at a facility in the middle of the northern Alberta bush, it's a fly-in type job. My shift is supposed to be 1 week in, 1 week out. Up until 3 weeks ago there was me and the person who works my off-shift, plus one designated as a spare in case something prevents one of the regulars from coming up.

I was scheduled to fly out on a monday 3 weeks ago, when I get a call from my office on saturday telling me that the regular cross shift guy will no longer be coming back to site... ever (he got busted for DUI and was fired from the company...genius) and the guy who is the back up is unavailable until the next week as he was on another project... fair enough, sh!t happens, so I had to stay another week, then the back-up arrives, but I had to stay an extra day to get him up to speed on the job.

I return 5 days later (not my 7 days off due to travel availability), and am told by the client that the back-up person is not allowed back to site due to his "extremely poor work ethic and motivation" (bastard decided he would sit in the office the whole time and watch netflix instead of doing his job). So I am now stuck up here until my company finds a replacement, becuase it's a fly-in, you can't just leave.

Fast forward to 2 days ago, when I'm slated to fly out this monday for a very important scheduled week off... my company's still dragging its feet getting a replacement, but they have someone in mind but won't contact the client about him. I finally spearhead the effort (I want to get the hell out of here!) and get it all set up so I'll have 2 1/2 days to train this guy before my week off, client's happy, but my office now wants me to return early since they don't feel comfortable leaving the guy alone for the weekend where we are the designated Safety/Emergency rep for the entire area, and he doesn't know all the emergency procedures.

I am now screwed out of more time off, and I had specified it was a 'very important week off' and I'm not just talking about the 2 dentist appointments, chiropractor, massage therapist, and denturist... but my birthday that saturday which my gf (knowing her very well) has made special plans for us. She is extremely upset/mad with me over this. And to top it all off I am not able to fly into location on the friday, they are doing some work on the runway, so I now have to DRIVE over 8 hours to location instead of the 1 1/2 hour flight.

At least my boss says he really appreciates this... yeah, that doesn't make my gf any happier or give me the time off I'm supposed to have. He keeps telling me that it's lots of OT, but hell I already work 260hrs a month! I want some damned time off!

[/rant]

It's a good thing I love what I do, and the pay's alright or I would have killed someone by now.

Holy crap Kurtis that is quite the story, sometimes even the OT is just not enough. I hope you can get this resolved and get some much needed down time. I guess it was luck that you had some time off when I was out there. At least let me be the first to wish you a Happy Birthday. Stay positive, things have a way of working out.

OK....that sucks! The OT can really be a good thing, but when it goes too far, you end up spending the $ on sucking up to the GF, and nothing is left for modding.

I think this just might constitute 'Taking Away Your Birthday'.

I won't begin to say that i feel your pain

a couple weeks back i get a phone call, as usual it was a last minute call at about 6:30 am

drive 43 miles to meet the oversize load, quickly set up & go greet the driver, find out where the loads destination is
I walk up to the truck, the driver rolls down the window, i politely ask how it is going
He is pissed off & starts chewing my ass up one side & down the other

I'm thinking screw this guy, i'm going to drop my sign & flags & he can kiss my departing ass, then i told myself to calm down & stick the job out.
Another pilot car was suppose to be meeting him at 6 am & didn't show up & now the delivery was going to be late by 3 hours
He was mad at the world, not really at me
shit happens, i wouldn't want to be the other pilot car service, he lost a good customer & the word travels like wild fire

I can almost (but not quite) feel your pain Kurtis.

Just think about the good aspects about your job (chief among them is that you HAVE a job). This is what I keep doing. I more often than not claim to hate my job and the bs that goes along with it, etc

Yet I keep plugging away, as it's a means to putting food on the table, even when I believe that I'm working way too much, am not home, etc.

I guess what I'm saying is "hang in there" it does get better. With any luck the person that is hired will be even better than the one who left (or at least close to being equal to your level of expertise )

Same goes for me, Kurtis, in fact, the title of this thread pretty much sums up how I feel about work right now, especially sitting at the office on what is going to be a nice Saturday. I work 60 hour weeks, days, nights, weekends, holidays, 12 wonderfully happy (sarcasm intended) hours at a time. And yes, while I am grateful to have a job, it did buy my truck and does pay the bills and all, providing a life, but sometimes the OT and the pay just isn't worth the sacrifice of the quality of life.

What's the sense in making all that money if you're never off or home long enough to enjoy it before it's already time to go back? Especially considering, at least here anyway, the more you make the more the government has their hand in your back pocket anyway, which is one among many reasons I myself will be looking for something else after the first of the year when people start hiring again and the holiday madness is over with. And I doubt Mel is upset with you as much as she is the situation in general, still sucks that it spoiled your plans for now but hang in there man and I sure hope they get you some help in there real soon!!!

At least you guys get overtime. I work a 20 hour day and make less than most of you . I know, I know, I signed up for it...

But that does suck man. Hopefully you get the recognition you deserve soon.

Sucks, but it'll work out it always does!

The only thing really that I don't like about my job is no overtime, no matter what. I have to work minimum 42.5 hours a week, and if need be more, no matter how much more. I worked like 75 hours or so a few weeks ago, that was NOT fun. It is seriously depressing to get to work while it's dark out, leave work when it's dark out and do that for a week. What's the point in even going home just to sleep, I'd rather save the gas money and just stay at work lol. The worste part is I get the same paycheck as always lol. I know many have it much worse, and like someone said above though, I'm so thankful to have a job.

Right after 9-11 happened and all the increase in security happened my father worked 84 hour weeks for nearly two years straight, no vacation the whole time, he was like a zombie and a ghost, he was depressed and looked like he was sleep walking all the time and we rarely saw him. He made a lot of extra money in bonuses I think but definitely there is a limit on what the body/mind can withstand...people simply just need rest.

Been there, done that Kurtis. I feel your pain. If Mel can forgive, that's great. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Hang in there. Things will get worse before they get better.
