Default Does the Y-pipe make that much of a difference?

I have a 2011 with the 5.7 Hemi. I am considering upgrading my exhaust to the magna flow bolt on kit with the 2.5" ss pipe and 5" tips. I really don't want to hack into my factory exhaust pipe. Is upgrading the Y-pipe that much of a benefit?

Factory y pipe is a big bottleneck in the stock exhaust. Probably the most restrictive part of the whole exaust as it comes from the factory.

^^^Agree with ORT. You can buy a Y-pipe for about $27 (plus price of install) so not much more to add to the overall upgrade.

The factory Y-pipe is an abortion gone wrong at best. I'm with these guys and say get rid of it ASAP if you want to open up the system.

There is a post in the exhaust section about the factory Y-pipe with pictures of factory vs aftermarket. I know my '06 HEMI has a Y-pipe that looks like a dinosaur crushed it!! Definitely going aftermarket when I re-do my exhaust at the end of October.

IF your into performance, i say that the stock Y pipe is a restriction

for me it doesn't make enough difference to matter, i don't get even close to full throttle

Has anyone tried to modify the factory y-pipe? I am a Collision Repair Instructor and a metal fabricator by heart. It seems to me that it would be simple enough to cut the restriction out of the factory y-pipe and weld the pipes back shut. If there is one thing that all body men are good at, it's making something out of nothing. This way the OEM pipe stays in place and it does not look all janky.
I will attempt this and if I am successful I will post pictures. Hopefully it is not a failed attempt.

By all means go for it, creativity is what helps spawn new mods, but it seems like a lost cause to me. For the work it is to hack out the stock pipe, and wled in the new one it seems like converting the stocker is just too much time on task

I agree, but there's nothing stopping you from trying something new and different. The thing I hated about the stock y-pipe was how it it was flattened then put together, and the restricted area was more than just the y-pipe, but carried upstream about 8-10".
