Default Tailgate on or off

Does it really make any difference in mpg if the tailgate is off??

And that was about the most scientific way of proving it, too, lol, that show was what came to mind for me when I saw this question.

I notice when some trucks are drag racing they put the tailgate down. I assume it suppose to make the times a bit better? Also I was reading an article about how tailgates were getting jacked from trucks all around. Apparently it costs 1 to 3 grand for those suckers. If I come out of the supermarket and its gone I know why. Just to give you a heads up.

Yeah the mesh and net style tailgates hurt the mpg even more than having the tailgate down or off. Also I believe bed covers hurt the mpg also, which doesn't make sense, but it hard to argue with the science of how they tested it. As I recall, the bed covers hurt the mpg the least.

truck companies know air dynamics and designed the truck with that in mind.basically when you begin to start driving the box actually fills up with air so when you are driving at 50 mph its like having a toneau cover(as shown in wind tunnel test).but with tailgate off the air travels across the bed down the bumper under the truck and causes lift on the rear end causing some drag.this i confirmes on mythbusters if u watch entire show.toneau cover best option/ mesh taigate 2cd/tailgate up 3rd/tailgate off worst.is what i recollect from show, but there are lots of other independant tests showing similar results

The first thing I thought of when I read this thread title was that Myth Busters show, seems I'm not alone.

The tailgate down while racing is actually a myth too....when you get up to speed, it acts like a wing and adds weight to the rear end....making your times slower! It is better to remove it than put it down, I run mine closed
