Default 3400 feet below surface!!

I figured I would share some underground pics I took while working this summer in Thompson, Manitoba (8 hours north of Winnipeg and north of the 55th parallel) I was working in a big underground shop and the 3400 level of 1 of the mines up there, I am a level 2 apparentice HD mechanic and am back in school now . I tired to resize the pics so they wouldnt take up a ton of room, and they were taken with an old iphone so they arent the greatest, Enjoy!

1 of the 2 service bays (200 feet long by 40 feet wide -approx. the 2nd side was nearly twice as wide) didnt look like this too often LOL

This is a CAT 8 Yard scoop tram used for moving ore that has been blasted, This one was crushed by a fall of ground, squished the top end of the motor and rad, entire motor and rad were replaced..

Standing on top of a rock bolter looking down the smaller bay scoop tram infront and mine cat personnel carrier, the bolters have a sizzer lift that goes about 20 feet in the air

20 ton crane with a 10 ton behind it in the bigger bay

Maclean rock bolter on the 100,000 pound lift in the wash bay, in for a service

Me on top of a bolter

2 of the tradesmen I worked with this summer looking at an 8 yard scoop

Another rock bolter with the sizzer partially up and brand new boom assembly that I got to install! These are used from putting 4'-12' rods (bolts) into the ceiling and walls in the mine with steel mesh to keep it from caving in

A not full grown 3.5 yard next too a full grown 8 yard scoop, with a dog humper hanging on the back hahah he had 30 years so no one told him what to do

8 yard with a flat tire

CAT 30 ton rock truck

Atlas Copco 2 boom Jumbo drill, used for drilling the face of a drift to plant explosives

Hose reals on the right with engine oil, tranny fluid, hyd. fluid etc.

I had never really been underground before (went a couple hundred feet at a tourist attraction when I was a Kid, this was the best and coolest thing I have ever done. I worked up there for 3 months and want to go back underground when school is finally done in april!

it is incredible to see where it has come, pics and shvoels 100 years ago to 80,000 pound machines, This mine went to about 6000 feet, there is a mine here in sudbury(nickel capital of the world) that is approaching 10000 feet and there is one 4 hours north of here that is even deeper, it is a closest to the center of the earth I believe, I would not want to work that deep as it would be extremely hot, at the shop at 3400 feet many days were over 100 F, 40C we had one day it was 129F, 54C, that was an A/C lunch room kind of day haha. I had a ton more pics but these were some of the better ones that showed the machines and the shop

Thanks guys! There wewre quite a few other machines down there but alot of them were stationary or didnt come in much so I didnt get pics. I mostly worked in this shop but did go out on the ramp (a spiral ramp linking different levels of the mine, ex. level 1900,2100,2300 etc all the way to 6000 feet, off of the ramp there are tunnels (drifts) that follow the ore body, but these parts have no light other than from your vehicle and hard hat light, if oyu turn that off you couldnt see youy fingr on you nose...
Cajun, its not cold at all, its the opposite, its very hot but its all depends on how good the venitlation is and the weather on surface, if its rainy it will be very humid. There are fresh air raises that brings fresh air (and returns it) so usually that is a cool place to hang out if you get hot, i spent a bit of time there hahaha other levels could be alot colder or warmer and every mine is different. Im glad i got to show you fellas something a bit different and share what its like, the city I live in was built on mining and is still based around it, the company I worked for has huge operations here so I hope in May I can get on here and not go back to Manitoba!

That is cool, and funny thing is I was just reading about job shortages in Austrailia I believe , that they are needing people bad and people from all over the world is traveling there to work in the mines 12 hour shifts for a couple months on and off and making $200,000.00 + yearly... Id do it if I could.

I dont doubt it, it is amazing how the mineral based industry (mining, oil etc.) stay unaffected by recession and global downturn... I worked with people this summer that were going to gross nearly 200... but thats working like everyday of the year... in the 3 months I worked I had 811 hours, 6 days off for 12 weeks, worked 11.5 hour shifts.....

the POTASH mines in saskatchewan predict that in 5 years they will be 15,000 workers short and nearly 30,000 in 10 years... and the rate of pay out there is better than where I was, ticketed mechanics start at 43 bucks an hour, 7 bucks more than where I was... and the work is alot more slack from what I hear( it was pretty slack where I was too) I enjoyed every minute of the experience though, safety has come a very long way from what you would hear about 30-40 years ago..
