Default Daytime running lights

I have seen previous posts about DRLs but thought I'd let you in on my experiences with trying to activate them. Others have said they've had no luck getting dealers to do it- that they are only activated for Canadian trucks and it requires an additional module. I emailed Chrysler with my S/N to ask if they could be turned on. They replied no - that it was an option my vehicle did not have. (MFD May, 2011) Yesterday I got my truck back with the new TC installed (so far so good). When I dropped it off, I asked if the DRL could be activated. Ha, they must know something Chrysler doesn't, 'cause they did it! Also did a ECL flash update that I was not aware of. So, for those interested in having the DRL turned on, it is possible.

Starting in 2002, DRL (Daytime Running Lights) are a programming function. From 2002-2005 it is a programming function in the FCM (Front Control Module), and from 2006 on the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module).

Anyone that tells you that DRL cannot be programmed in a 3rd or 4th gen Ram either -
a) Is unaware of this programmable feature
b) Is not knowledgeable on how to use the scan tool
c) has been instructed (for whatever reason) to tell you that it 'Can't be Done'

BTW - Every US Ram that gets imported to Canada 'MUST' have this feature activated before they can even get a tag for it. Most complain about the $75-$125 programming fee.

i wish they would make it so the rear lights would be on all the time like the daytime running lights. is sucks driving in a down pour or a snow storm on the hwy and you can barely see the jackass in front of you driving a silver car that doesnt have the common sense to turn their lights on. sorry just venting

I have been in the habit for years of Always turning might lights on. Started doing it when it became law in IL that you had to have lights on in rain. Also was so frustrated at the inability to see others as another poster mentioned, that I decided not to be one of those. Its become such a habit that sometimes I think I've forgot only to find they are on. Guess I don't need the DRL activated. My way I have rear lights too.

The DRL function, is that something only the dealers can turn on?
I like the feature on my truck of having the lights come on with my wipers.

I also am not a fan of DRL's. Every car or truck I've had with drl's, it just seems that I am constantly changing the bulbs, while an suv i just traded in without DRL's, was 7 years old with 150k miles on it, and it still had the original bulbs. And forget about upgrading to a brighter bulb with DRL's, you'll be replacing them every few months.

Well, i went to my dealership about 2 years ago, they tried to activate mine using the tool, they couldn't make the lights come on
By the way they know that in my business headlights have to be on when i am working
Maybe the 2011s have better software that was not available back then, something is missing that the Canadian Rams have.

I ended up covering the little dome shaped thing on my dash board right in the center by the speaker. Now when i start my Ram, my lights come on, & i have had no problems & i am legal when i am working

my last 2 vehicles had over 300K on them when ive traded them in on new ones and both have drl's and still with the original bulbs. the drl are not on at full power as is with regular "lights on".

A couple of years before DRL's were mandatory on all cars here in Canada,
the Ontario Provincial Police had a policy to drive with the headlights on at all times.
If you saw a car with lights on during the day, you knew it was a cop. I bet you could see the car beyond the range of the old radars. It probably cut down on speeders caught.

I don't know why anyone would not want DRL's.
I'm sure there have been many studies saying that it is safer to be seen than not.
They run the high beams at reduced power and I haven't noticed that the bulbs have to be replaced any more often.
I am actually thinking of an HID conversion. These will be on the low beams, so no issue.
