Cool getting a little more power??????

hi yall new here just bought a 2008 dodge ram sxt with 22,000 miles, it has the automatic and 4.7 ...

i need some help getting a little more "top end" power. i have a 1988 20' camping trailer and i cant keep the truck going 70 on the interstate, it bogs down at the slightest hill and it slams down to passing gear if i keep pushing the pedal down, it will run at 70 like that BUT the tack is at about 4500 and i dont think it should be pushed that high.

any and all help would be great....

Gearing will help but there's not a lot of help out there for a 4.7L when it comes to towing.

You can do a cold air intake, a freer flowing exhaust and a programmer. All those will help with a power increase and, believe it or not, a bit better fuel mileage.

Does your transmission have a Tow/Haul mode? If so, make sure you use it when towing.

How much does your trailer weigh?

Good luck!

It's not that no one knows, it's that there isn't much support for the 4.7l engine. I have added a CAI and a programmer and gained a good bit of power, but most of it was low end. Regearing should help if you will be towing a lot. That trailed might just be too much weight for the 4.7 though.

Do a little homework and see what your truck is rated at for towing. Then find a scales and weigh your truck and trailer. Most places, such a grain elevators, will weigh your vehicle for free if they aren't busy.

It could be its too much weight for your truck, or your truck doesn't have rear gears meant for towing. For example, a 3.92 rear end would be good for towing. Travel trailer also catch a lot of wind, which isn't helping things the faster you go.

Like others have said, most of the stuff built to increase power is designed for the 5.7 hemi or the Cummins turbo diesel.

Different rear gears is my bet for the most help for you.

Dude, I'd recommend driving slower. 70 mph is too high for towing a big camper. Our little 17' camper is even a load keeping it at 60 mph and it weighs about 2600.

Towing a trailer, not knowing the weight, at 70mph is EXTREMELY dangerous.

I pull a 24 foot Terry Resort camper trailer, will all the gear in the trailer. I'm estimating 6000 lbs, trailer dry weight is 5000 lbs. My Ram with a Tonneau Cover has enough power to pull the trailer no problem but you feel the drag compare to my older Chevy that had a High Rise truck cap and it would just cut through the wind, only top corners of trailer had bug splatter. If planning on doing lots of travelling I would suggest buying a High Rise truck Cap.
