Default Engine Pinging. 5.7

I noticed this weekend that my truck was making a hell of a engine noise. it sounds like a lifter or to much lash in a rocker arm. you really notice it if its around 2000 rpm and rolling into the throttle. If im just cruising and lightly press on the gas you'd think it was a rocker arm hammering the top of the valve. i do have a DSP with the 91 tune running 93 oct fuel. I also have a BFI intake. I also notice that it makes a popping or backfiring sound through the intake. The BFI is loud and maybe thats what im hearing. but it sure dont have any loss of power. if you lay into it you dont here any pinging noise. i may have just gottn a bad tank of fuel. I should mention that i was in the mountains this weekend in Boone, NC. elevation is only about 3300ft. not sure if that is causing any problems. Let me know what you guys think about this. any info would be great.

Elevation should not make a difference with your mods but if you get a chance, get to a dyno shop and get an air/fuel ratio over 3 runs and see what ya get. If it's 13.0 or higher, you are running lean.

These engines run a bit lean, even with a program on them. Adding a bit of fuel after you know what your air/fuel ratio is will help a lot.

Also, remember with winter coming, you may also be getting some ethanol fuel which causes a lean condition to become somewhat worse.

Thanks Maddog. I knew you'd be the 1st to reply to this. Im thinking of changing the tune to see if that makes a diff. I have access to a chassis dyno anytime i need it at work. I have yet to dyno the truck since getting the DSP. I hope thats all it is. Im thinking if it was a rocker arm id hear it all the time. what is the ideal air/fuel ratio on the hemis.

LOLOLOL...am I that predictable?

Ideal A/F ratio for the Hemi tends to vary by engine (some like a richer mixture than others) but a good guideline to shoot for is around 12.5 A/F. My truck likes to be around 12.5 to 12.7 with no appreciable difference in performance.

My 6.1L was initially set at 12.5 (by me with my Predator after some dyno runs) but I found that it liked a little bit richer A/F and it makes its best power around 11.9 - 12.2 A/F at WOT.

That's when I turned it over to a CMR tuner to optimize all settings. From 358 RWHP stock to 379 RWHP with the canned tune to 411 RWHP with the CMR tune was quite the process of testing and tuning.

I installed the 87 tune today to see if the pinging would go away. i can still hear it but its not as bad as it was with the 91 tune. im going to fill it up with 93 oct again tomorrow since its under a 1/4 tank and see if it gets any better. i may have gotten some bad fuel. im gonna try a diff gas station. probably shell or exon if i can find one.
