Exclamation 99 ram downshifting while crusing

Hi everyone,

I have a 99 ram 2WD with a 318 auto trans.

I have started noticing a problem since I purchased the truck.

When driving in the city or highway and trying to hold a specific speed (80km/h for example) and not using cruise control the truck accelerates smooth up to speed, but when trying to maintain that speed the truck will downshift causing the RPM's to jump up for a second and then it kicks back down.

Also the fuel consumption seems excessive...even for the V8

Any ideas what it might be? Just need to get pointed in the right direction...

I am a mechanic but not an auto mechanic...I can fix anything, I usually just can't determine what needs fixing most of the time.

any help appreciated

I've always put your symptoms down to a low torque engine trying to push a brick wall down the road, it simply struggles to keep pushing when it's out of its power band, the engine is under powered for the way they are geared, as far as I'm concerned. (I've got two of em) I live with it... What drives me nuts is they jump right from 5th,(OD) to 3rd, skipping 4th completely on the kickdown. As far as mileage is concerned, if you are doing long journeys, in particular, stay off the corn fuel, premium pays for itself, however, if you're running around town all the time, corn gas gets you much the same mileage. I have an 06 explorer, and on a recent trip to SD, I couldn't get it over 90 MPH on corn, whereas on premium it would run at its limit of 109 with no grief at all. The mileage simply stinks on the low and midgrade... corn is for food, not fuel, I strongly believe, try buying it for animals these days, whew!!! My Dodges have gotten 19.6 MPG on premium, on the interstates, at 80 MPH, however daily use local they get 13-15 MPG, consistantly. For mileage, too, if you have some miles on your truck, look at replacing your O2 sensors, and use a high quality air filter, and one other thing which I swear by, is I run the narrowest tires I can find, street tread, and I have them siped every 3/16" or so, mileage has been upped considerably, as well as control and traction in snow, slush, and snirt. 205-85-16 is a good size for my purposes, (inexpensive, in comparison to 245-70-16s, as well) theres a reason fleets run narrow tires... what works for you may differ.

thanks for the input,

I was leaning towards doing the trans filter and gasket, and doing a trans flush. Either that or some type of vacuum leak that i have not been able to find.

I don't have any other drivability issues, and the truck has lots of power for having 270,000kms on it.

I have also noticed it doing it now when I accelerate nice and easy, instead of getting up to city speeds nice and slow to conserve fuel it will kick down and go like a bat outta hell.

Would the dealer be able to correct this or should i live with it? No check engine lights so i would assume no trouble codes have been stored.

Sounds likely the kick down cable is to tight or miss ajusted. But a trans flash never hurts ether. It gets cold up north!

My 98 kicks down when starting. 2nd to 3rd shift. The PO is going to fix as he knew the problem at the POS. There is a senor that is bad in my trans. I haven't had the time to get a buddy to follow me to the guys shop so I have just been living with it. Well, that and I've replaced the intake gasket and the heate core...

i just got my trans rebuilt and the guy mention that the transmission in 98 and newer dodge trucks the shift points are electronically controlled by the trucks computer, which explains why my 98 has a solenoid on the passenger side fender where as my 95 didn't, so your mechanic mite be right about a bad sensor. But hey it gives you an excuse to haulass.
