Default Air Restriction?!?!?!

I had my headlight out looking at something today and notice how much air is actually being blocked from going toward the air filter/tube. I was thinking about cutting some of the plastic in the way to open it up a little more, The plastic only appears to hold the clip in the back of the headlight on. I wouldn't cut it completely but enough so it still remains functional yet not block the intake. what do you guys think, here is a pic.

What I'm talking about doing, sorry for the kindergarten drawing

Yep, jrm has a post here that shows that spot, and it indeed looks a bit tight, even for airflow. I kind of like jrm's alternative solution here as it truly opens up more airflow and maybe even some ram air effect at highway speed.

yes I have seen that, but I do not have a factory air box anymore and am running a k&N (metal housing) I am not cutting a hole in the metal housing, structurely that plastic would still be fine. has anyone thought about this or noticed it?

After looking at that plastic from the inside and outside, I wonder if it's some kind of splash guard? I can't think of any other reason why it would flare in like that.

yep opening that hole up would help a bit. Stupid how they design a very nice stock intake pretty much all the way from the throttle body to the fender, then make all the air available through a hole the size of a quarter...

Cant be a splash guard, theres nothing for it to splash into, esp. With the wheel well splash guards. I think this combined with a ram air hose neer the tow hook would be a 1 2 punch.

I don't know, mopar...it's amazing what rain can do when running at 70 mph, and I'm not talking about the water coming from the tire in the fender well. Driving at highway speed, rain is like a pressure washer into any opening crevice. I'm not claiming this as an absolute fact by any means, but it looks like that big flap of plastic is for something, and that's the only thing I can think of at that place. I'm speculating that since the fender well air opening is about the same height as potential water spray around the headlight opening, they may have designed that flap to extend in front of the possible path of water spray.

That's a good point but I doubt that's what it is ^. I'm leaning towards the poster above about two parts designed by difference people.

Im not saying ur right or wrong, but since the passenger side has the same design it makes me unsure. Im glad im getting the whole spectrum of feedback though. The headlight should do a pretty good job of blocking out the rain,
