Default 98 Ram A518 Trans issue

I have a 98 Ram 1500 2wd 5.9. The trans was working fine until the morning where it got under 30 decrees. It slips between 2-3 and now I have a "whining" noise, mostly in gear. The noise goes away after I leave it in neutral for a minute, but returns when I put it in gear. It would not use any gear once.

I had the filter changed and bands adjusted about 6 months ago. The fluid is not brown and does not smell burnt. But now it looks to be about a pint on the high side. The fluid level was fine about 2 weeks ago. I did do a Throttle body mod (smoothed out the holes) and put new IAC and the other parts on it. It is not throwing out any codes but my scanner shows an old O2 code but will not delete it for some reason. I have a new O2 sensor and exhaust.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The whining noise usually means that the pump is either going or clogged. That's probably why it's not catching in gear. I had this happen on my Ramcharger and added Lucas' transmission stuff (cant remember), and delayed the inevitable for about a year. Gave me prep time. The fluid level is indicative of a bad pump because the fluid isn't circulating.

Should I take out some fluid, add some lucas then refill as needed? I know it will need a rebuild but if it can last just a few more months until then I would be very happy.

That's what I would do. If it's got one foot out the door $12.00 for another 6-12 months is a bargain. Not to mention it can't make it any worse.

If the pump is not circulating, the rest of the tranny is on the way out the door. Already had this happen, typical of dodge. If you can catch it early enuff you might be able to get away with just replacing the pump instead of the whole trans internals. Unfortunately this is a go/ no go situation. Best of luck
