Default Check engine light

Hey all, been a long time. The check engine light is on in my truck and I'm wondering if there is a way to source out what the problem is without the use of a code reader.

Try this:

1. Ignition switch off
2. Press and hold the trip reset knob
3. Turn the ignition switch to on but do not start.
4. Hold the reset knob for approx 10 seconds or until the word
CHEC appears in the display then release.

Be ready to write down some numbers. If I remember right, "999" means the check is done.

It should, ramfam. If it was an EVIC equipped truck the process is a bit different.

Alright, I did what maddog said and I think its all good. I never got any numbers indicating there was a problem, and my wife failed to mention that the engine light shut off while she was driving it the other day. I thought at least that the pcm would have stored the trouble code to be identified at a later time. Also, when it was doing its systems check I never really got a "999" indicating check complete, instead the proper mileage came up on the odometer after a few minutes. Could this also indicate that the system check was completed?

Alright, the check engine light came on again so I tried maddog's method. Unfortunately, I got no readings so i turned the key to off. I dont know how I came up with the idea but I turned the key back to on (without turning the motor) and then off again. I did this three times and the odometer read p0138. Found out I have a faulty o2 sensor. Try what I did if your having problems sourcing a trouble code, it may help.

That's cool that it did that, congrats on finding out the problem. For those with tuners you can also use it to read scan codes. It also works on other vehicles at least mine does, I just used my SC cortex tuner to scan our 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer. Was able to get three codes from it's PCM and determined that I have a faulty brake switch circuit. Just felt like throwing this out there, I was surprised it worked on another vehicle.
