Default tow/haul mode and gear to do it in?

ive got a 4.7 and tow a boat weighing about 2000lbs. on my other trucks id just hit the tow/haul button and go as i didnt have a choice on which gear to tow in. ive only towed the boat once since ive had the truck and hit tow/haul and left it in "5". is that the right way to tow or should i have hit the +/- and dropped it into "4"? speed im griving are about 80km/h to 100km/h. thanks

You will get lots of different opinions here. The only reason I use the Ram is to pull the boat. There are several facters to consider when deciding what gear to be in. Wind, hills, what rear gears you have, using cruise control or not. I like to set the cruise and enjoy the ride. I am in 4th gear when pulling the boat. If the TC is unlocking, use the lower gear. Happy fishing!!

When operating in Tow Haul mode, 5th gear (OD) is disabled and the 2-3 and 3-4 shift patterns are modified. Shifts into 4th gear (now operating as OD) are allowed during steady cruise and the automatic closed throttle downshifts into 3rd gear are performed when driving conditions warrant.

With respects to the torque converter, a feature designed to improve fuel economy has been incorporated into the transmission called the "torque converter clutch". The clutch engages automatically at calibrated speeds. This may result in a different feeling or transmission response in the upper gears. When vehicle speed drops or during acceleration when the transmission downshifts to second gear, the clutch automatically disengages.

The clutch will not engage until transmission and engine coolant fluids are warm and since the engine speed is higher while the vehicle warms up, it may seem as if the transmission is not shifting in OD when cold. This is normal. Pressing the Tow Haul/OD OFF button, when the transmission is warmed up, will demonstrate that the transmission is able to shift into and out of overdrive.

Basically what you will feel is like it's reached a much higher gear in OD as the clutch engages.

Watch the RPMs. RPM will increase without transmission downshifting.

Maddog...So what gear am I using when in tow haul..#4.....#5?

#4, dafoot. The same observation applies. At 60 mph in 4th, your RPM will be higher than 60 mph in 5th.

Not to mention...the little yellow light on your dash cluster lights up to let ya know you are in Tow/Haul or OD Off.

I understand the above. Your earlier post stated that 5th gear is disabled when in tow haul. This is not my experience. There is a huge difference in rpms, using tow haul #4 and 5. So my question is..What are the two top gears in tow haul?? I thought tow haul only changed shift points, not disable any gears.

With a 2000Lb trailer, chances are the truck won't even know it's there, but if it makes you feel better, press the tow/haul button and enjoy the trip. (No additional down shifting required unless special circumstances arise.....and you WILL know what they are if they arise)

I try to explain what MADDOG mentioned in different words.

When you select tow/haul, it does a couple of things -
a) It changes the sift pattern slightly. The truck will stay in a gear for a bit higher RPM to ensure the engine is at a higher torque RPM when it shifts to avoid shift 'dancing'.
b) The second OD gear is disabled, as it is likely to cause up/down shift issues when pulling a trailer.

On our 545RFE transmissions, the top gear available in tow/haul is 4th gear (displayed as 5th gear in the EVIC)

Hope this helps.

^^^^ So If in tow haul 5 and while you are driving, disable tow haul, rpms will decrease. I plan to go fishing tomorrow. Will report.

That is correct....as long as the 'load' is low enough to allow the trans to shift up into OD2.

If it starts shifting up/down a lot on it's own, then pressing the tow/haul button is a good idea.
