good luck, post some pics of your catch

so this is how i understand it.........hit tow/haul mode and drive, if the tranny seems like its constantly looking for the "sweet spot" (rpms are constantly up and down) hit the +/- and drop it so it reads "4" on the display?

thanks for all the help guys

It's still 4th gear that is operating when in Tow Haul mode, not 5th even though that is what is indicated on your display.

And Brad is correct, the shift patterns do change, hence my comment on the closed throttle shifts to 3rd when conditions warrant. What that means is the trans will shift down to 3rd when load conditions reduce speed and/or RPM's. So, when headed up a hill in Tow Haul, it will happily hum away in 4th until the program determines it needs to shift down. Try Tow Haul with cruise control on. You'll see what I mean.

Wow, confusing. So in tow haul..5th is really 4th, and 4th is 3rd. My boat is 4,500 lbs. I really like how the Ram pulls in tow haul, #4. TC seams to unlock too often in 5.

Ok...been fishing the past 3 days. What can I say, truck works as stated by Maddog. But did notice the following. When in tow haul 5, transmission will down shift with out un-locking the tc. In 4..tc will unlock before going into a lower gear. Just wondering why the difference?

4 on the Dash = Direct. Any additional downshifts put you in under drive, and by disengaging the TC, the shifts are smoother. Personally, I wish the TC would stay locked until the engine RPM drops below 500RPM...in any gear. But I'm in the minority that thinks smooth shifting is for cars, and hard firm transmission saving shifts should be the normal in trucks.

I just pulled my 6000 pound travel trailer down to Padre Island and back, around 2500 miles towing in all. I kept the transmission in tow-haul, manually shifted to "4" (which is actually the direct 3rd gear) for nearly the entire trip. The torque converter would unlock occasionally going up some of the hills, but not enough to warrant a downshift.

Driving 55-65 mph, the RPMs ranged from 1900-2200. I could have run it in "5" and gained one or two miles per gallon, but it would have downshifted going up most of the hills. Plus, I think it's easier on the entire drive train if the engine is revving a little faster when pulling a load.

When I tried it in 5th, the RPMs were around 1600 and it sounded like the engine was lugging, or struggling. The HEMIs create more torque at faster RPMs, which is what's needed when towing.

I kept an eye on the transmission temperature, and most of the trip it ran between 130-140, except when I was in stop and go traffic in Houston. It hit 165 there, but that was still well within normal operating temperature.

I bet your 2000 pound boat pulls nice and easy, especially without all the wind drag that you get from an 10 foot high travel trailer. Good luck fishing!

Bill

Man, Will...those 130-140 trans temps while going down the road towing are impressively cool.

What I've noticed is that the tranny temp runs 60-80 degrees hotter than the outdoor temperature.
