The are a lot more complex and expensive than an exhaust brake which is what most pick up trucks and diesel RV's run. An exhaust brake is kind of like a throttle body put in the exhaust tube. It has a butterfly that closes to reduce the exhaust flow (essentially creating more restriction) which uses compression to slow down the RPM of the engine. Overall they both have the same idea of slowing down the RPM of the engine but a true jake brake works far better than an exhaust brake ever will. And like I states above, they are far more expensive.

My point (and I'm aware the Ram doesn't have a true Jacobs brake)...

Quote:
...Although Jake brake properly refers to the Jacobs brand of engine brakes, the term has become a genericized trademark and is often used to refer to engine brakes or compression release engine brakes in general, especially on large vehicles or heavy equipment.
J. C. Bamford (JCB) builds heavy equipment however..."JCB,"

Bombardier's Ski-doo brand, in the Maritimes at least, by extension lent the name Ski-doo to any snowmobile, regardless of manufacturer.

Here's a pic to get back to the intent of the thread...

Yikes!!!
We had 15-16 degree weather here today
I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear.
But it's the total opposite there.
Wow
