Default In Need of Knowledge!!

Brother, I have just joined here but referenced your postings MANY times before--with much success I might add . Hopefully you may help me again.
Times are tight and so is the wallet, but my cat is clogged and I HAVE to fix it asap. I have the exhaust unbolted and working feverishly on separating it from the muffler so that I can "gut it" and do the old plug fouler trick. I got to thinking though, IS it possible for me to just run two straight pipes from the manifold to the rear? Just thought of instead of going through the trouble of gutting and all to inquire about this. I know the legal aspects, but I do not have inspections here and am only thinking of this as a way of a few more hp and maybe better performance. Depending on your response I may have a couple of further questions. Thanks for ANY help.

Why not cut out the cat and replace it with some pipe? That seems the easier option.

Sorry MADDOG, I responded to your reply in another line instead of directly.

I thought about that as well ramfam and wondered if there would be a problem if I let them remain in their respective locations in the new pipe?

MADDOG, thank you greatly for your input and that was the idea after the initial consideration of gutting the cat. However I have not been able to locate, as I am working against the clock right now, a y-tube to join the manifold pipes to the muffler. So far, from what I have seen, it is going to run me about as much to purchase the straight pipes as it would the catalytic alone. I am weighing options and about to go bonkers as I have been on the net nearly all day trying to see what others have done and what I may be able to do. Forgive my TOTAL ignorance please. I have NEVER dealt with an exhaust system at all, only engine issues, and I feel like I am blindfolded walking in a dense forest during a lunar eclipse right now. It is simple for me to look at, but like calculus for me to figure out!!

If you have to cut it...cut it from the back.

Break it up and fire it up. It'll all blow out (just don't breath it in). Then you can just get a coupler and two clamps. I'm not sure about the '98 but my '95 only has one O2 sensor, upstream so occasionally the CEL will come on...but I know what it is. Since you don't have inspection that's up to you.

If need be, you can use a piece of 2" fence pipe and knock a hole in the middle, but that usually leads to it just breaking apart later, rattling around, and clogging back up.

I'm just making these suggestions to get you back on the road. I realize that walking can be faster than driving with a clogged cat. I figure cutting the back is only one pipe instead of two and the coupler and clamps are well under $10.

Just an FYI. A local scrap yard will pay YOU somewhere between $85-$100 for a large domestic cat, if you scrap the old one, so make a couple calls.

If you decide to replace the cat the $$ from the scrap one will save you $$.

Take in mind I have no knowledge of your conversation with MADDOG and you may have already reached a solution.

If one of the member's does help you out it'd be nice if you gave them a rep. Just click on the scale in the upper right hand corner of the box.

I hope you get it worked out.
