Yeah, I get about a 3/8" difference in height, but that's way close enough for guv'mint work. Something I just noticed is that if you have a receiver hitch attached, the back bolts are really close to the spare. They'll be even closer to a full tire. I put some thick rubber heater hose between the bolts and spare.

The 17" spare is close to the same height as the 20" as you noticed

If you look closely at the spare & put it beside another 17" that would be normally sold for your vehicle, the normal one would have thicker tread & some other differences too

This is a full size spare, but only to be used to get you home or to the tire shop
If you used a donut spare, you can't run it it on the rear axle at any highway speed & not for over 50 miles

It is the first step that all the vehicle manufactures are using to reduce weight to get better MPG on the 1/2 pickups, so that they are in compliance with Federal Rules to increase MPG
The next step will be to have NO SPARE, only a patch kit & a plastic air pump

Actually, if your adament about a full size spare, I was, I went out and bought a 20'' steel rim and mounted a new tire on it, that way the winch will fit through the centre, it fits under your truck, trust me, that's where mine is.

The 20" wheels WILL fit in the spare spot but you have to pull of the chrome clad

As I recall, the 3rd gens with factory 20s used a full sized, steel 20 inch spare so you should be able to nab one at the junkyard.
