Hmm...Now you've got me thinking...
I do get a noise that I originally thought was a loose exhaust or heat shield...
Would a bad U joint make a noise similar to a loose heat shield?

I dunno, is it a squeaking noise? Squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak?

Put the truck on level ground and in neutral so there's no tension on the drive train. Check the rear u-joint for rusty discoloration and wiggle the shaft side to side and up and down.

Does it clunk a little from reverse to drive or the other way around?

i still havnt figured it out, i had the dealer check it out and they say its fine, they ran the computer and say there is no codes, but the sputter is still there, i noticed it worse the other day when i had a trailer behind me, let the truck level off and hold the gas still and it starts to sputter, let up a touch or step down a touch and it quits, all you have to do is change the rms just a tiny bit and it goes away.... very irritating

Sounds to me like you are losing a cylinder for a split second. Could be one of your coil packs causing it, but I would check the boots under the coil pack and make sure none of them are cracked or broken allowing the arc from the coil pack to go to ground instead of firing the plug. I had a Jeep that had a burnt wire that did the exact same thing and it took me a month to locate it. Just had a small hole in it allowing an arc only at certain rpm anyting over or below it would not do it.

I could see how the noise from my bad u-joints could sound like a loose exhaust. I would get a popping sound occasionally. Almost a metal on metal, so I could see pointing in the direction of the exhaust system, but mine was definitely the u-joints.

Default Same here

I had the same problem. Mine ended up being the coil on the number one spark plug was bad. After I replaced it the vibration and the shuttering went away. My fuel mileage increased as well. It only happened as I his around 2k rpm. I hope this works for you. Don't let it go too long.

Best of luck,

RMT

I've got a few pics if you would like. I tried to take some but would keep going and forget to take them at every step.
Makes sense but which ones were they? The ones on the rear drive shaft or the ones on front drive shaft?
