Default Towing

Has anybody used either the Diablo or Superchips mainly for towing? I pull a probably 7-8K pound boat and I would like to help the trucks performance for that. Mainly firming up the Shifts and some low end TQ. I know the SC has a towing setting. i couldnt find the answers I am looking for in a search. Thanks

Yup....I've towed light, medium & heavy loads using the Predator and Tow/Haul mode. It does help, especially power for uphill pulling.

so basically your just using it for the more power to actually move the load? Does it help the trans much? I did find out the Superchips tow program just changes the transmission. Absolutely no change from stock in power

The transmission is firmer (the addition of the 91 octane tune does add some shift firmness), the HP and torque ratings on the engine improved and they come on earlier in the RPM range.

Lastly, if you are in tow/haul mode while hauling, you are also altering the shift pattern and gear.

Yeah I see the changes there. shitty 3.55 gears and 35" tires arent helping either. 4.56's to come

I regularly pull 7000Lbs of trailer. I am using the DS Predator with a 91 tune. Like MADDOG I hit the tow/haul button and go. I also installed a Sonnax line pressure booster on the trans to even further increase the shift firmness. The trailer is a non-issue at any towing speed, and hills are barely noticeable. If the traffic is slow, I have plenty of reliable power for passing, and never see either the engine or trans temperatures anywhere above normal. DO NOT ask about fuel mileage when towing that much trailer by an 'aggressive' driver with a size 12 Fun pedal activator. With the way I drive, I don't get gas mileage pulling that trailer.

The Sonnax line pressure booster is a wiring device that plus into the line pressure sensor on the trans, and the OEM cable plugs into it. Install time - < 2 mins.
It works by altering the signal from the sensor, so the TCM functions normally, but the actual internal line pressure is about 20 - 35psi higher than what it is reporting. End result - slightly high internal trans pressure = firmer shifts = less slippage = less heat = longer lasting transmission.

The reality is that Dodge has reduced the trans internal pressure so the trans will shift smoother, giving the truck more of a car like smooth shift to keep the cor owners (that bought a truck) happy. For those of use that use a truck like it's a truck, this equates to reduced transmission life, not because the trans can't take it, but because it's programmed to be a car.

Before ti installed the Sonnax unit, I would typically see a 30-50deg increase in trans temp while driving in town, compared to not pulling a trailer. (lots of shifting). After installing it, I typically see 0-5deg temp increase under the same conditions. One the highway, the trans runs the same temp as it does when empty.

Side effect - Firmer shifts.....which personally, I really really really like.

You can get them at just about any transmission shop. Unfortunately, I can't find them an autoanything.

Sonnax P/N - 44957-LB2
It's for the 45RFE / 545RFE transmission.

I did NOT do a how-to thread on this, as it was already done by others. If I can find a link to one of them, I'll post it up for you.
