Default re-thinking my swap... 5.2 or 5.9?????

So im rethinking my engine swap... I wanted to beef up a 5.2L 318.. why? beacuse no-one does haha.. But iv been doing ALOT of reaserch about these LA small blocks and the 360 is alot easier to squeze power out of if your on a budget.. Which is my case.. I dont want to have more than $2,000 wrapped up in this project including the price of the motor, computer, and harness...

So please post ur ideas/advice/recomendations its all greatly appriciated!!!

I agree...the 5.9L is a better candidate for a build. So if you go with a 5.9L, don't forget you have a different computer, different sensors and a different underhood harness.

Actually, the Magnum 5.2 and 5.9 have standardized top ends. Same intake, heads, etc. The computers are different. While the 5.9 will have better torque numbers below 3000 rpm by virtue of greater displacement, the 5.2 pulls close above 3000. The stock Magnum heads support approximately 400hp at 6000rpm. Both engines, all else being equal, squeak just past 400 at the same speed. As to money, put a good cam in the 5.2, slip in a 2400rpm stall torque converter. I'm not downing the 5.9 as it's a great engine, but if you have a 5.2, it'll be considerably less costly to bump it up. The 5.9 is an easy power up, but add in the computer, cost of the 5.9, different flexplate, any other little stuff that pops up. If you're starting with a blank page, and either way you have to buy an engine to start with, the margins are much closer. If you go 5.9 I'd still slip in a higher stall converter. That alone makes a big difference.

Well i have a 5.2L now..and what i had planned was getting anouther engine out of a local junk yard for like 200-300$.. and jus putting it on a stand and building it there.. that way my only mode of transportaiton is all tore apart in my garage lol...
but il have roughly around 2000-2500$ to dump in this truck..Thats including the price of the engine, all new gaskets, bolts, ect.. And i have resources to port and polish for free so that will save some money..

So in your opinons, which will i get more power out of? with the 5.9L option il have less to spend on performance beacuse of buying harnesses and a computer.. But out of the factory it had more power and tourqe..

The 5.9 will always have a power advantage that comes with greater displacement... Right up to the point that the heads become the limiting factor. So, a junkyard build. You have the relative luxury of time in that your plans are to build and swap. You should be able to scrounge. The harness swap isn't necessary. Computer, yes. You could kick up the 5.9 by swapping IN a 5.2 Magnum cam. It's better than the 5.9 and a real low buck option, though not as good as an aftermarket swap. Do the kegger mod and throttle body clean up. Being willing to use, and having access to a yard, if I was going for max relative power with minimum $, I'd do the 5.9 swap.
