Default Check Engine Light Not Working

The check engine light doesnt come on at all in my truck, could it be dis connected? if so where is the connection/connections for it? Could it just be a burnt out bulb? how do i get inside the gauge cluster to find out?

Have you had your truck checked for codes? Has the light ever come on before? Maybe there just isn't a condition present that triggers the light to come on?

Im going to go buy a obdII scanner tomorrow since auto zone in ca doesnt do free scans or rent them out anymore, and the local shop wants 90 bucks for the diagnostic. Better off buying the one i looked at last night for 65. I've only had the truck for a little while and it just failed the smog i need to do for the registration and the new title transfer. Since i just got the truck i dont know if it has ever came on. The guy at the smog place said its not working at all and after he pointed this out i noticed it doesn't come on when you turn the key to the on position. They com on in all cars/trucks when doing so correct?

True and I read your posts about that and yes, you're right, didn't think about that but it should come on when the key is turned on as part of the bulb check. Guess I was just wondering how they could tell it didn't work when they inspected it. We have motor vehicle inspections here yearly as well but nothing close to what you deal with in CA.

they probably noticed it didn't come on when the key was turned to the on position as well...
So back to the question... is there somewhere it could be disconnected at? if so where? and can anyone give me some pointers on taking the gauge cluster apart?

the bulb is probly just blown out cuz normally when the light doesn't come on it means computers not receiving power or malfunction ed. if you would notice truck would not start. you'll have to take the cluster out. basil just tell held in with clips. Then the cluster itself should have 8 millimeter bolts holding it in. then it should be a little twist in socket.

so i pulled the gauge cluster out, it was just a burnt bulb... the bad part is that i went to auto zone and o' reilly auto parts stores and neither one of them had a replacement. they had just the bulb neither of them had the whole thing.i tried replacing just the bulb with the new one but it didn't work. i thought maybe it was a bad connection on the cluster so i tried swaping it for the light next to it and that one worked. i tried the one i had just fixed in that spot and still nothing...
i asked the people at the parts store about ordering a new bulb/housing and they told me only the bulb was available... im going to try NAPA tomorrow but im not going to get my hopes up..
does any one know where to get the bulb and housing?
please tell me i dont have to go to the junk yard and pull a cluster out just for one gauge cluster light.

Dorman/motormite/Help has them for .99 each.http://images.oreillyauto.com/parts/.../40245-007.jpg

Just ask someone at the auto parts store to check their catalog.

The parent company Motormite has a "Help!" section in most stores and they're sold in the little card mounted blister packs.

Or you can Google - Instrument Panel Socket -

Nothing wrong with junk yards. Sometimes you find neat stuff there! Id like to have more time in my life to go there myself.
