The clunk in the steering column could very well be a loose or worn link in the front suspension. When you said tapping I was thinking of a small tap, not a metallic thump.

Yeah....I agree with Maddog. Sounds like suspension or something in the steering assembly its self. I would crawl underneath and start push pull testing things like steering stabilizer and steering linkages. Best to do this with the trucks front wheels off the ground. If anything is loose or thumps back and forth I would do something about that relatively fast. Good luck man.

Thats what I was going to say. I got my truck used, 2006 4x4 2500 it had crappy tires and I was experiencing the same thing. New upper and lower ball joints on both sides and it was still there although greatly reduced. Got new 10 ply Nittos and problem solved.
