Default a little confused

I have a 05 1500 QC with 4.7L and 3.55 gears also has factory tow package with tranny cooler, power steering cooler and pre-wired harness for brake controller and lights. I have a 30ft camper at about 5500 lbs my confusion is this; loading capacity on my truck is comparable to a hemi equipped truck according to door sticker and I know that the tranny and rear end is same as a hemi with a 3.55 rear so I assume that the weak link in tow ratings is engine torque. I have pulled the camper 3 times with no trouble other than pulling a steep hill at 55mph or so. It will drop to around 48mph w/o dropping in passing gear. I have no problem with this and just wanted some feedback/opinions as to whether or not the truck will hold up ok with this set up. It has 120k on it and seems to have been well maintained so let's hear it......

Welcome to the forum!

That trailer is not above your tow rating so as long as you maintain the truck, you should be good. Does your transmission have a Tow/Haul mode? If so, I'd make sure you are using it when towing as it will keep the trans temp down (heat kills) and it changes the gearing a bit to maintain speed without revving the engine too high.

yeah I use it religously also have all the required stuff, weight distributing hitch, sway bar and don"t get in a hurry. Used to tow it with a 07 Chrysler Aspen Hemi but the truck handles so much better than the Aspen the lack of power is worth it.

Like MadDog said keep it out of overdrive and keep up w/ maint.
You would be better off w/ 3.92 rear end, maybe you could find one in JY or craigslist and swap them and sell your old one for not much $.
Mine pulls so good, I rarely wish for a hemi. 4.7L/5 sp auto/3.92 L/S has been best balanced drivetrain I have EVER had in a truck!

I had thought about changing gears but I only plan on using this truck a couple of years and I only tow my camper 6 - 8 times per year for 15 to 50 miles one way each trip so I will probably leave it alone. Who knows maybe I will get lucky and it will hold up for 4 or 5 years.
