Default Generation II Steering Gearbox Stabilizer

Took my Grand National out last night and could barely keep it on the road the first few miles because I just got back from a 1200 mile trip in my Dodge. Anyway I have an 01 2500 with play and wander in the steering. Does anyone have any experience with the steering gear stabilizer for sale on the web?

Any feedback is appreciated!

If your sloppy steering is a result of the box flexing on the frame due to worn mounts, this will help.

However, there are other more prevalent causes of poor steering. Bushings, end links, trackbars and mechanical wear inside the steering box can all contribute to this condition.

I'd inspect the box mounts, check all endlings and bushings, the trackbar links and see if you can't adjust the steering box.

Tried to tighten the steering gear yesterday. I lifted the front end and made several adjustments (in). I did notice the tire moving slightly after about an inch of travel when I finally quit so maybe it's better. It's tough not to second guess myself. I'm really picky about steering. Anyway I'm ordering a stabilizer from customdiesel today. Hopefully get it in this weekend. I'll get rid of this truck if I can't get the steering fixed. This is ridiculous. I look like I'm drunk on the interstate.

Here's another question. I had two alignments done last month (post lower ball joints). The first gave me a refund because they couldn't set my steering wheel.(They couldn't align it either.) The next place got the steering wheel straight. Here's the problem: When we test drove it he said it would have "memory steer" for about 600 miles with the new ball joints and that it would seem like a pull. I think it still has a pull to the left beyond the memory steer. I couldn't get them to agree. In Tennessee our roads lean to one side pretty hard for runoff and when the road leans to the right and I go left that tells me I have a problem. Tire pressure is good.

Any suggestions? It's not an extreme pull, maybe half a lane every 100 yds.

Everything else under the truck appears tight. It also has a lukes link.

Default Steering slop

Replaced everything (RedHead rebuilt box) and added this bearing brace setup too.

Even replaced the steering shaft due to wear. Make sure you tighten it up ..

I added that steering box stabilizer to my 96 2500 and it made a HUGE difference. The truck used to wear me out on a long highway drive. Once I put on the stabilizer I could drive it with one finger.

Just make sure your ball joints are not worn. They're hard to tell if they're worn but if they are it will make the front end wander.

Not sure if you fixed your issue yet but I had the same problem. After checking everything I decided to go with a new gear box (the stock one is known to wear) I also replaced the steering column bearing with a new poly one. The original bearing is known to fail as well. I found the poly bearing on line (sorry forgot the name) It is mentioned in one of these threads though. Just google it. Anyway, problem solved.

Be aware that the new steering box will wear out again without the steering box stabilizer to support the steering box shaft. That factory drop pitman arm is a killer.
