Default Cummins 4BT swap into a 2007 1500...

Seriously considering this...Anybody done it? Know anyone thats done it? Will the tranny that comes with the 4BT bolt up to the 1500 like the stock? I mean what all does this swap entail? I know the motor mounts match up but thats about all i know. Or is it even worth it for that matter? It currently has the 4.7 in it and i do mild to moderate off roading/mudding. NOTHING SERIOUS. any info and input is greatly appreciated.

My buddy put one in his jeep. It's pretty bad ass but a TON of work. Much easier on an 74 CJ5 then it would be in an 07 1500
There's are companies that make conversion but I don't believe their is a 4bt to your transmission and would guess it would be a good bit of fabrication to get another one to fit. Not to mention all the work with electronics of your truck.
Alot of paperwork involved swapping as well.
I personally think a 4bt is to small for a ram

The 4bbt would be underpowered for the 1/2 ton and I can't say I've ever seen or heard of a bellhousing to go between the 4bbt and the 545RFE. Also, the tranny that is attached to the 4bbt is much shorter so you would have to modify you tranny cross member as well as get a custom driveshaft.

I had the same thoughts a few months back and found this to be the best resource on the subject.
http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.php

I decided to not bother with the swap. The 4BT is underpowered and runs louder and rougher than the 6 cyl diesel and all the tranny combo's available are loose and clumsy and nowhere near the smooth driveability of OEM.

If I ever did come back around to doing a diesel conversion, I would start with the 5cyl mercedes diesel found in the Sprinter Vans. Much smoother, quieter, and powerful than a Cummins with better mileage. A bit pricier but worth it in the long run.

hm i see. thats a little disappointing to hear i guess. I would really love to have a cummins in my truck and i know the 6bt is too heavy for the 1/2 ton front end to handle. :/

A 5.9 would be much more reasonable, can an has been done

For as much as any swap would cost your much better off modding yours even if its a 4.7 or selling/trading your truck for a 2500
And if ydont need a cummins stick with what you have. It'll cost you alot more in the long run

The 5.9L swap is not as uncommon as you'd think, and beefing up the front suspension isn't as hard either, either a set of 3/4 ton springs or even better a set of 2600# bags and a few other rod ends and you'd be set.

Use a transmission and transfercase from a 2500
Your stock trans will not hold the power
I really don't think it's worth it when you could just but a quad can short bed 2500/3500 that's already built for the motor

^^correct, the 545RFE won't hold with the torque the diesel will put down so you'd have to swap to a 68FE from a 2500/3500. The cheaper option would probably be to buy a 2500 QCSB unless you can get an engine and tranny for cheap. Even a high mileage engine can be resleeved and you're set.
