Default Torque Converter Bulletin

Star Case: #S1121000005

Release Date: 6/30/11

Symptom/Vehicle Issue:
Customer indicates that the vehicle has a slight moan, drone, or rattle noise and sounds as though it is coming from the exhaust, The customer may indicate that the noise occurs under light load (1400 - 1700 engine rpm - around 40 to 60 mph)

Diagnosis:
Confirm that the noise only occurs while the torque converter is in lock-up at low speeds (around 1400 - 1700 engine RPM) at approximately 45 mph. If the noise is heard while transmission is in partial lock-up at 1400 - 1700 RPM, put the vehicle into ERS - Tow/Haul mode (deactivates MDS and torque converter in full lock-up) If the noise is unchanged, perform the following repair procedure. Probably not a bad idea given the number of people who have experienced this problem. Up to the mods to determine if a sticky is necessary. If so, below is a link to the star case picture originally posted by Rammin88.

Also, you may want to add the content from this thread to that sticky as TransEngineer had some valuable information to add that clarifies specifically why this occurs, what the side effects are, etc....

http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=95895&page=2

Think adding a sticky on this is a good idea.

Moved to the TSB section.

Does the bulletin advise on what year trucks this applies to?

I do see they list years for which the T/C fits but normally they also list what year trucks the bulletin is for.

Is it possible this is happening to my 2013? As I've had a sound that even the dealer transmission mechanic says sounds like an exhaust rattle. To me it sounds like two washers that are loose, rattling against each other.

Do you have any idea what your vibration is? Could it be the torque converter? I don't have any physical vibrating in the steering wheel or anything. I just have that weird vibrating noise. And otherwise the truck seems to run and drive and change gears fine.

I don't have a vibration, all I get is a ratcheting sound and the tech at the dealership here said that its probably a solenoid. I'm not to sure cause it seems to be getting worse.

That seems like a dealership type answer. The only solenoid it could be would have to be located in the center of the vehicle. As I hear it plain as day when the window is down on either side of my truck.
